my mine gripe with the ZL1 is that it doesnt come with a forged bottom end, and the stock blower doesnt leave much room for improvement. if you are looking for high hp (800+rwhp) then you will end up replacing everything anyway.

Your not that far from Lingenfelter- one of the best in the business. Check their website out. They may seem pricey, but the work is outstanding. Also comes with a 3 yr/ 36,000 mile warranty on what they replace (Basically my whole drivetrain). Highly recommended.
And I have a very conservative tune putting out 650 HP with 11 lbs of boost. Wife even drives us home when I throw down the alcohol- quite drivable. Zero problems and so much fun to drive. I don't think I'd want to take the hit selling current car, and then modding away on the ZL1. All depends on your wallet & wife!!

The benefit of going with a ZL1 is primarily going to be the warranty. But for the $20-25K difference in what you will pay for a ZL1 over an SS you can build a faster car.

Since the SS is paid off I would just mod that! Yes it's not a ZL1, but it will/can be a sick SS for alot less.

Mod the SS and keep it looking stock on the outside. Blow the doors off unsuspecting rivals and claim its just a stock SS.

Your SS is paid off, why finance all over again?

I vote ZL/1 but I am irresponsible and well into my 2nd or 3rd childhood. I trade in cars like they are a pair of shoes.

This question comes up in the Jeep forum all the time when it comes to a base Wrangler or a Rubicon.
The way I see it is, if you have the money, buy the better vehicle. If you never, ever plan on selling it, then build it up, but the "value" of the car is always going to be it's "base" model no matter what mods you put on. Your built 2SS is still a 2SS, build into a Zl1 and for resale purposes and insurance purposes, it's still a 2SS. The mods are worth whatever someone thinks they're worth, which is NEVER what you paid for them. Put 60K into a 2SS and you will NEVER get 60k back out of it cause nobody can get a loan on it. You will get 23k plus a pittance for your mods. Just my .02 cents. |

Upgrade the SS. Relatively speaking it doesn't take that much more $$$ to hang (and/or surpass) with a ZL1 compared to the money you would spend buying a ZL1.
