Question First oil change copmplete. BUT

OK did my first oil change, used Pennzoil Platinum and a Mobil 1 filter. Put the car up on rhino ramps drained the oil, removed the oil filter, so far everything is going well. Installed new filter tightened everything, poured the first 5qt's of oil from the jug, then poured another 3 from the other jug making sure I left 2qts behind. Started the car lowered it off the ramps, checked the dipstick(which sucks by the way) and I was hair over the hash marks. I decided to go for a drive let it warm up move the oil around. While driving I noticed that the oil pressure gauge is slightly higher than normal, it used to be at the mid point between 0-30, now its just 2 needles over that mark. Also I don't know what the normal oil temps were before, I was hoovering around 200-215. I get home pop the hood and check the dipstick a couple of times, and I'm still just above the hash marks. What should I do, I don't want to damage anything. I need suggestions, this will bother me all night...

My dad's Miata does something similar. Depending on the filter used, I've seen the oil pressure vary between 40lbs and 60lbs at hwy RPMs once fully warmed up, and between 60lbs and 90s lbs when cold.

If it's just a little over the full mark, I wouldn't be worried about the level either. (As long as it is not way over filled).

I agree the oil pressure is probably a function of oil temperature and pressure drop across the filter, not oil level.
Some filters will catch smaller particles, but with a trade off of being more restrictive.
You could always change to a different brand of filter and see what the oil pressure does.
I prefer WIX filters, and use them on all my cars.

If you put the right amount of oil in it, don't worry about it.

Well I put 8qts in, but I now think there could be some residual from draining up on ramps. I'm not worried about the pressure since its just slightly higher, plus I agree its probably due to the filter. My main concern is the excess oil.

Yeah, if you did not level the car out, there is a good chance you did not get all the oil out. Personally, I jack the car up drain the oil out and lower the car back down to get all the oil out. There is quite a bid of oil that will come out when I let the jack down. Hate to say it, but you might want to do it again. Wait for a few more responses before you decide. There are some really smart people on this forum.

In the back of mind I'm thinking I have to do it again, now the question is after I drain the oil can I reuse it?

You probably could, but I would not. I would bite the bullet and buy new. Again, that's just me, and your probably fine not doing that, except you'll have to be sure to measure correctly whereas buying new it is already measured.

Walmart carries it in 5qt jugs, go figure most stores carry it in 4qt. Just my dumb luck.

Alright for peace of mind I'm going to drain the oil and put new oil in, correct me if I'm wrong but the filter does not need to be replaced. Now I figure there will be at least a qt in the filter and probably half a quart of residual in the pan. So I'll start with 6.5 quarts, lower the car off the ramps and check the dip stick. Does this sound good, I don't have a Jack so lowering the car to drain any more oil from the pan is not feasible, plus I prefer not to remove the filter.

Yup, Walmart (and other places) sells Mobil1 synthetic in the jug ($22).

Dont drain oil......... Thats a waste.

if your worried about being over the hash mark then just drain a cup full out and be on your way.

Me id leave it and drive it......... its totally fine.
If your blowing oil outa air box then you have way to much.

Leave it and save your money.

I agree, just drain some of the oil out and roll the car off the ramps. Check the oil on a level surface and add to the full line. You said you had some oil left, so take out enough the first time and not have to repeat. the process.
