I agree...Honda and Toyota forced the big 3 to make big improvements to their 4 cylinder engines.

I think your boat picture confirmed the quote, "you are what you drive" too bad you don't get to use it much.

My wife's VW Beetle gets almost 40 MPG on the highway, plenty peppy with the 1.8 Turbo 4.
I've got an 01 TDI beetle. Get's 47-52 mpg's and has over 180k miles on it so far.

I've reduced it to nothing but a beater because it is falling apart in the interior.

2001 TDI Beetle Negatives (and there are a lot!):

Roof liner falling apart

Door liners falling off (has gorilla tape holding it on now).

Sun roof gutter stops up flooding floor board on drivers side

Leather seats ripping

Power windows fail often and need replaced

Keyless remote totally stopped working

Trunk switch on drivers door quits working in the cold winter, so the trunk never latches shut. Hit a bump and it'll open and slam back down.

Locking drivers side door with key arms alarm, but the electronic board in the door switch/alarm has weak solder, so according to temp, it won't un-arm the alarm. You have to open the trunk with key and leave it open, then open drivers side door with key, start the car, and then shut the trunk to keep alarm from going off and shutting down start of car.

The rubber coating over the interior plastic, once heated by sunshine over the years becomes sticky, thus dirt sticks to it like tape making everything look dirty. Its horrible.

Center console arm rest clasp broke, so when flipped up out of the way, all your stuff falls out as the lid flips open and hits the back seat.

Seat back release broke off, so I have to stick something in there to flip the lever to let anyone in the back seat.

AC and heater doesn't work because the foam on the blend door has disintegrated. It blends heat and ac now, so hot summer you get heat instead of AC and cold winter you hardly get any heat. I have chunks of foam in the AC vents and all over the dash and inside the car.

Radio doesn't sound clear anymore. I think the roof antenna is coming loose.

Speedometer mph randomly climbs up to 20mph faster than your driving. You stop and no kidding, it'll show up to 20mph stopped. You have to turn off the car, turn the key to acc/batt back and forth to get it to come down and no time later its right back at 10 to 20mph sitting stopped.

I probably have forgotten some other minor issues, but those are most of them. I've never owned a car in my lifetime, that had such a horrible interior and electronics. I owned an 1987 F250 for ever 20 years, a modded 1997 Mustang GT for over 20 years, etc., and never had issues like this.

Pluses

The VW ALH TDI is dead nuts reliable and gets awesome mpg's.

Only gripe with the motor is that it is an interference fit engine and has a timing belt that needs replaced around every 80k miles. Dealer charges $1,000 to do it. Kind of negates some of the fuel cost savings when you have to spend so much in maintenance. Plus, if that belt breaks, being interference fit, it will destroy the head and possibly the pistons, so it would cost more than the car KBB for to fix.

Anyway, hope they have improved them or else you'll want to trade that beetle off when it starts to age.
