Usually though when people ask what tranny you got, it is usually answered 4 speed, 5 speed, etc. if it's a manual and they say automatic for the auto tranny. You must be a young whippersnapper.

Otherwise, in the olden days, the number of speeds in a GM car usually could denote manual or auto. For years GM only offered 4 speed autos, but you could generally get a 5 speed or 6 speed manual transmission. The first CTS offered GMs first 5 speed Automatic transmission. Most of the 80s and 90 and even the launch of the C6 Camaro was done with a 4 speed auto and a 6 speed manual.

An auto will alway be just an auto no matter how many gears. 6 speed tells the story short and sweet. I never told anybody it has a 6 speed and they ask me is it a manual or an automatic. They just know.
