HELP: Conflicting 1969 Camaro Powertrain REAR AXLE Availablities
Hello,
I sincerely would appreciate some help on this matter of CONFLICTING information on the 1969 Camaro. I've literally spent HOURS researching and resulted in nothing more than a bad headache. CONFLICTING INFORMATION CONFLICT: #1 [ENGINE] : 200hp 307ci [SOURCE] : 1969 Restoration Package (1 part of the technical information) [DATE] April 1969 - Indicates the M40 "Turbo Hydra-Matic" had the following for the REAR AXLE: [W/O A/C] - Std. : 2.56 [W/O A/C] - Econ. : NO [W/O A/C] - Perf. : 2.73 [W/O A/C] - Spec. : NO HOWEVER: [SOURCE] : 1969 Restoration Package (1 part of the technical information) [DATE] October 15, 1968 - Indicates the M40 "Turbo Hydra-Matic" had the following for the REAR AXLE: [W/O A/C] - Std. : 2.56 [W/O A/C] - Econ. : NO [W/O A/C] - Perf. : 2.73 [W/O A/C] - Spec. : 3:08 <---- HOWEVER: [SOURCE] : 1969 USA Brochure [DATE] UNKNOWN - Indicates the M40 "Turbo Hydra-Matic" had the following for the REAR AXLE: [W/O A/C] - Std. : 2.56 [W/O A/C] - Econ. : NO [W/O A/C] - Perf. : 2.73 [W/O A/C] - Spec. : 3:08 OR 3.36 <---- CONFLICT #2 [ENGINE] : L22 155hp 250ci [SOURCE] : 1969 Restoration Package (1 part of the technical information) [DATE] October 15, 1968 - Indicates the M40 "Turbo Hydra-Matic" had the following for the REAR AXLE: [W/O A/C] - Std. : 2.56 [W/O A/C] - Econ. : 2.73 [W/O A/C] - Perf. : NO [W/O A/C] - Spec. : 3:08 OR 3.36 <---- HOWEVER [SOURCE] : 1969 Restoration Package (1 part of the technical information) [DATE] April 1969 - Indicates the M40 "Turbo Hydra-Matic" had the following for the REAR AXLE: [W/O A/C] - Std. : 2.56 [W/O A/C] - Econ. : NO <--- Switched places? I can't tell what is TYPO's (GM Brochures, and documentation is just FULL of bad typo's) and what are upgrades. Before anything goes on my site, I research and cross-reference between 1000's of sheets of information along with books, online resources, brochures, and magazines.. But there is not a lot of information with this deep of combinations on the 1st gen's.. Thanks

I looked there and could not find any Engine/Transmission/Axle combination charts anywhere.
I found engine and transmissions specs, but nothing to link the 2 to rear axles including W/ A/C, W/O A/C, and what rear axle ratio were ordered (Std, Econ., Perf, Special, etc..)

www.camaros.org also has a forum. You can go ask there. If anyone will know, someone there will... Jerry and people that actually worked on the assembly lines browse that forum!

Deleted it. The information in your post really confuses me. Every example mentions the Turbo 400 3 spd auto but it was only available on the big block SS or COPO, and wouldn't come with the engines listed above.
Most likely later in the production year cycle optional non-standard rear axle ratios were added and became available so they wouldn't be listed on earlier lists. Kind of like how that added the big blocks after production had been going for 3 months in '67. |

I believe you misread my message. There was no reference to the TH400 anywhere in my message (which would be for the bigblock engines). Only the M40 for the Small Block (ie. as mentioned in the post; L22 and the 307ci.) Because we are referring to the small blocks for 1969, this would be the TH350; TH400 were for big blocks such as the 396ci and 427ci's. :-)

Rear Axle ratios
Here I what "The Big Book of Camaro Data" by John R. Hooper, says:
FOR CONFLICT: #1 [ENGINE] : 200hp 307ci For the M40 "Turbo Hydra-Matic" transmission in a 1969 Camaro Std. : 2.56 Econ. : NO Perf. : 2.73 Spec. : NO FOR CONFLICT #2 [ENGINE] : L22 155hp 250ci For the M40 "Turbo Hydra-Matic" transmission in a 1969 Camaro Std. : 2.56 Econ. : NO Perf. :2.73 Spec. :3:08

Option M38 is the THM (Turbo Hydra-matic) 350 3-spd Automatic for small blocks. Option M35 is the 2-spd Powerglide Automatic also for small blocks. Still confused, but probably over thinking it. It just seems odd to have that M40 THM 400 reference everywhere. Confusing format. Last edited by MLL67RSSS; 01-19-2014 at 09:53 AM. |
