TPMS relearn tool
Has anyone actually used a TPMS relearn tool, where did you get it and how much was it?
I've searched this site and the internet. I know the older cars you could "relearn" by dropping tire pressures, but that does not work on the newer cars. I know there is supposed to be a GM tool for $40 - $60 for this, sometimes called out by part # EL-50448, but that part doesn't seem to exist within GM. If you search online it will show an aftermarket tool, but I want to know if anyone has actually used one successfully. The dealer claims there isn't anything they can sell me, obviously they have their own tools to do it, but they are expensive and not GM products. I know the dealer will do it for me for free, but I'd like to at least be able to change my tires myself without a trip to the dealer - even just for the 2 minutes to reset TPMS. SO - have any of you done it with a tool and not the tire pressure method? |

Don't the 2011's have the same "re-sync" procedure in the Owner's Manual as my 2010? Or is it something else you're trying to do here? I guess I'm not understanding. I installed new aftermarket sensors in my wheels and just did the re-sync procedure in the manual, and everything works fine. I didn't need any big fancy electronic gizmo!

My only guesses as to why they would change this:
1) Maybe some corporate lawyer thought there might be some liability from someone running through the reduce pressure process a couple times and then running on soft tires. 2) Somebody decided that some component of the system would be cheaper without this functionality and suggested they would save Y cents times Z units. At first I thought maybe they just decided to stop publishing the pressure method, but I've seen enough posts and other online comments to believe they did actually change something sometime in 2011. Several people with later 2011's have said they tried and it doesn't work at all. Others in the middle have said the manual didn't show the pressure method but it did work. No info anywhere from GM on the subject (other than the Manuals). |

I'm lost - the TPMS is to monitor pressure in your tires? If so can't you just hit the reset button to relearn? I had mind come on yesterday and I saw the option to hit reset to relearn. Worked fine.

I think the TPMS relearn tool is not needed.
I have two sets of wheels with TPMS and when I swap them out, they seem to automatically relearn each set of TPMS's. Has anyone else experienced this? Otherwise, it's no problem to air down your tires a bit to do the manual relearn. It only takes a bit of muscle to pump the tires back up with a bicycle pump. Besides, I find our TPMS's way off in terms of accuracy.
