Distributor loose?
Mechanic is telling me my distributor is loose and throwing a "camshaft position" code. This is on a Vortec 350. I asked him what do you mean it's loose? He just said it's loose. He said I need a new distributor and it's $517. So I said are you saying the gears are worn out or something? He said yes the gears are worn (I pictured Jon Levits here...."yeah, the gears...that's the ticket!").
I have a sinking feeling the distributor just needs to be tightened. What should I do?

Second opinion.

I would assume that he means the gear interface between the cam and the distributor but I am not sure that even if those gears were worn that it would throw a code. If that is the case then he should be able to remove the distributor and show you the issue. And you can purchase just the distributor gear separate for about $20-30.
My 350 TPI in my '88 IROC-Z wore the gears on the distributor to almost razor thin and never threw a code. |

OK I had my buddy who used to run that shop call and talk to the guy...he said the problem isn't the gears, but the bushing on the distributor shaft has gone bad and that it's easier to replace the entire distributor than just the bushing. Does that sound right? Still seems like BS to me.

I would be leery but I am wrong more times than I am right.

new vortech distributors are around $200.00 buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, before you go thru all that trouble.... check your timing. the code you are getting is P1345 for engine misfire/cam position sensor malfunction. This code tells you that the base timing of the vehicle is not correct. You really need to get the vehicle scanned with a scantool that will read the cam retard with the engine running over 1200 rpms and then make adjustments by turning the distributor, unless it is timing chain/gear stretch/wear or wear on the distributor gear. You could mark the current distributor orientation and turn the distributor counterclockwise, clear the code and start the vehicle and rev over 1200 rpm to see if it comes back, but the scan tool that can read the cam retard is the best way.
