Most Radar detectors are obsolete now because of the K band proximity sensors on most new cars. The radar detector companies have been working hard to filter out these proximity sensors... I just bought the new Escort IX and it does a great job of filtering out these proximity sensors, no false alarms. As of now, this new radar detector, released in Sept/Oct. is the only one I know of that is very effective at filtering out these new car proximity sensors.... Be careful of older radar detectors on sale, you will get lots of false alarms ... My old detectors were so annoying, I retired all of them.

I always felt they are a false sense of security. You think you're safe and the next thing you know you get pulled over anyway.....and when you get pulled over with a radar detector you can pretty much count on a ticket at that point.

I know K and Ka have instant on and I am pretty sure that X also does but I could be wrong. Here in WA I think I only saw X a couple of times when I first got my detector but now everyone seems to be switching to K and Ka. Of course it is different in every state though.

Good call on the shielded detectors! I forgot about those! Just don't have them mounted right on the windshield were it is easy to spot them! lol

Another thing I should mention is that Lidar/Laser only works if the officer is stopped, they cannot use it while driving. It is also harder for them to get a lock on a vehicle with Lidar when it is raining or through their window. While it is not impossible and they certainly can do it, in most cases they will just use radar if it is raining.

Also, radar only works head on. So if the officer is on a perpendicular street, their radar will not be able to pick up your speed.

To be clear, if the officer is sitting in the median perpendicularly to the highway, that means usually he has his radar gun in his hand and is aiming it right at you head on which means he will of course be able to get your speed.

My Valentine V1 is the first detector I have had and while occasionally I do get falses for proximity sensors, it does do pretty well at filtering most of them out. I use the YaV1 app which lets me do more customization to my V1 to help filter out the falses. Without that app, it is a pretty noisy detector.

I have heard valentine has put out some updates to help with this though. I just haven't gotten around to sending mine in to get updated. One thing I don't like about it, I just want to update it myself lol

I definitely agree with you if you have a lower end detector. However, in my experience, I have had mine for almost 2 years and it has saved me multiple times.

It does depend on a lot of things though which is why a detector doesn't guarantee you will never get a ticket. It only helps with one of the many ways officers can catch you speeding. You definitely have to realize that and make sure you aren't putting all of your trust in your detector.

Also, i have mine mounted right under my rear-view mirror and hard wired in so there are no hanging wires so it is a little harder to see. Of course the officers I have talked to about detectors have said that basically if they catch you speeding and see a detector, it is a guaranteed ticket.

They are only a tool!!! to help. You still have to be aware of your surroundings. This is what i have, in fact getting ready to hardwire in. http://www.beltronics.com/manuals/v995manual.pdf

Waste of money. Get jamming equipment if you truly want to beat system. Detection just means you know when you're getting a ticket

Exactly! Awesome! If you haven't found it already, there is a thread somewhere around here on how to hard wire it into the dome light.

That is what I did and it has worked great so far!

I thought the same thing before I got mine but I decided to get one and see what it was all about and my mind was changed in no time.
However, it really depends on a lot of things. You can't get a detector and expect that you can now do 40 over the speed limit everywhere and never get a ticket again. That would be ridiculous.

What detectors are good for is if you are doing 10-20 over (assuming you have a good detector) you should have enough of a warning to slow down so that you don't get pulled over. That doesn't mean they won't help you if you are doing a top speed run or something but obviously the faster you are going, the more time it takes to slow down to the speed limit when you get that alert. Of course, the detector doesn't guarantee anything other than it will alert you to the radar.

Also, as I mentioned in my original post, the radar only gives the officer the speed of the largest and closest vehicle so as long as there is someone between you and the radar gun, the officer doesn't have your speed. So a detector will not help you much if you go out at 3am and you are the only one on the road.

Keep in mind, I am talking about radar guns here. LIDAR (laser) on the other hand, no, a detector will not help you at all. It will just let you know you are getting a ticket. As far as LIDAR goes, get jamming equipment if you want to avoid/beat that.

I like when people say that they don't work and are a waste of money. Well condoms break, but you'll still use one right?

I'll just say this, if you're doing 100+ and/or speeding around a blind curve, there's a good chance you'll get a ticket. There's speeding and there's being ridiculous.

I heard you cannot be issued a ticket for instant-on radar. They have to prove they tracked your speed for a certain distance. I guess they can issue a ticket but in court you can get it dismissed.

You'd think with over 1,000 posts you'd know it not necessary to quote the novel.

Courts are strange and magical lands where anything can happen, but I never once lost a speeding ticket while using instant on.

"Your honor, I visually estimated the defendant's speed at XX mph. I used my (radar system) to verify my estimate, and the (radar system) indicated (the speed), which corroborated my visual estimate."

I've had folks argue against the radar, against my certifications, that I wasn't wearing my hat when I issued the ticket (yes, seriously), and never lost one.

On a side note, I used to play with my radar even when not running traffic. I'd hit the switch just to see who's brake lights came on. I didn't even have same direction moving radar, but it was a really good radar detector detector. I'm sure all those folks believe their radar just saved them a ticket.

These days I'm plain clothes and in an unmarked, I don't even have a ticket book, but even Stevie Wonder can see my unmarked is a police car. I'm amused when someone comes barreling up the lane, gets even with my car and realizes the white Charger with a spot light and police plates is a cop car and then rapidly decelerates and tucks in behind me. Bud, If I wanted you, I'd have had you...
