To get a better understanding of this concept, I recommend to all that are interested to watch the lecture from astrophysicist, Lawrence Krauss, "A Universe From Nothing". Fascinating stuff!

FYI, Blood is never blue, it just looks that way through your skin.

Hemoglobin
Hemoglobin is the principal determinant of the color of blood in vertebrates. Each molecule has four heme groups, and their interaction with various molecules alters the exact color. In vertebrates and other hemoglobin-using creatures, arterial blood and capillary blood are bright red, as oxygen imparts a strong red color to the heme group. Deoxygenated blood is a darker shade of red; this is present in veins, and can be seen during blood donation and when venous blood samples are taken. Blood in carbon monoxide poisoning is bright red, because carbon monoxide causes the formation of carboxyhemoglobin. In cyanide poisoning, the body cannot utilize oxygen, so the venous blood remains oxygenated, increasing the redness. While hemoglobin-containing blood is never blue, there are some conditions affecting the heme groups present in hemoglobin that can make the skin appear blue—a symptom called cyanosis. If the heme is oxidized, methaemoglobin, which is more brownish and cannot transport oxygen, is formed. In the rare condition sulfhemoglobinemia, arterial hemoglobin is partially oxygenated, and appears dark red with a bluish hue. Veins close to the surface of the skin appear blue for a variety of reasons. However, the factors that contribute to this alteration of color perception are related to the light-scattering properties of the skin and the processing of visual input by the visual cortex, rather than the actual color of the venous blood.

About 1% of the gasoline usage in the US is related to obesity. Gives a new dimension to the concept of HP/weight ratio.

The truth of the matter is: The original dialog was dead wrong and when Lucas had his faced rubbed in it he sat down and came up with the story above to cover his blunder. Now it is part of official Star Wars canon.

Saw the first one and had to keep with the topic a bit. I'm a nuclear machinist mate in the Navy and people always assume I get exposed to a ton of radiation.
The Truth-(stolen from EPA website because I'm lazy) The nuclear reactor that powers the submarine emits radiation. In order to protect the crew, the reactor compartment is shielded by steel, water tanks and polyethylene. With this protection, the crew members and the outside world are well shielded from the reactor’s harmful radiation. In fact, the crew members are actually exposed to less radiation than the general public. This is because on land there is naturally-occurring radiation, called background radiation, and water acts as a radiation shield. So when a nuclear submarine is submerged in water, the crew is actually being exposed to less radiation than what they would be exposed to on land. |
