WOOT! I Made it Into the Club!
First to Second @ 4500 and CRUNCH!
1800 easy miles on the tranny until today. I am going to hammer the piss out of it till it fails completely and then demand carbon blockers during the rebuild. -Funk

Agreed. I knew going into this that the 2nd gear grind was a very real possibility. The good thing there are a couple of different options to remedy the situation.

trans grind
Had same problem with m6 until i installed Hurst shifter and changed the oil to Mobil 1 full snythetic. Next thing to do is replace the line from the master to the slave for a quicker release of clutch.

Factory Hurst shifter here. Original GM fluid still in it. Got a good service manager and get to see him on Monday.
Rumor has it the 2nd gear syncro for the 2012 has been updated so I will know more Monday. Could be the way I am shifting but I have been driving manuals for 25+ years. I took it out today and made a couple of 4000+ rpm's with no issues. -Funk

Throw in 4 qts of Royal Purple Synchromax. Every one that I have done that to has improved.
A little bit of 2nd and 3rd gear crunch when cold seems to be the nature of the beast with these trans. The RP lube improves the cold shifts a bit. And avoiding high rpm fast shifts when the trans is cold, especially with a short throw shifter. The short throw magnifys the gear grind by trying to make the shift faster. I drove a '12 the other day with a Hurst short throw - very notchy, I didn't like it all even the clutch felt different - stiffer. Got back in my '10 with the base shifter and RP Synchromax lube - shifts much smoother. |

The crunch only happened to me once and the trans wasn't warmed up yet. Get the hash mark on the temp gauge closer to 180* and try it again. 4500 isn't even high.
Hasn't happened to me since. Finger's crossed...

I spent a bit of the weekend hammering the crap out of it and not a single grind in the bunch. I did make sure the tranny was up to temp this weekend. At this point I am going to call it a one off and attribute it to driver error.
I will be swapping the tranny fluid out this weekend for some Redline D4. -Funk
