That looks amazing. The question I have is I tried putting just LED replacement bulbs in the taillights. It made the DIC give me a message saying I had a light out does it do the same things with those Led's. Also made the lights flash fast.

I hate to be the one that's always bitching about your picture quality but I can't tell WHAT I'm looking at! I mean I see yours on the left and stock on the right but I can't hardly tell what either one of them looks like. I guess if I reduce the picture size I can see them a little clearer. When they're off they look kind of like the show car but when they're on they seem like they're not putting out enough light.

Yeah your image quality sucks. Are you zooming in? If so stand closer. If it is a problem getting the light to show up take them when it gets darker out. I a curious to how this is turning out but it is hard to tell by your pictures.

I have an idea to make some afterburner tail lights. Right now this is just the first phase of this idea and is not the finished product. I will not be using LED's for this project. I will be using less then 20 bucks of materials and some time to take the tail lights apart. Once I have a finished the tail lights, I will do a right up for it if everything works out. If it doesn't work out, I'll be buying new tail lights.
Here is a mock up of what I want to do and it is a very rough sketch so be kind, these photos and video are not the finished product. If I can get the look I am after, the lights will look like this at night going down the road. and here is what they will look like when the brake pedal is pressed. Nice and bright just like they should be. Here is a little video of the idea and should look much better and more 3d once I am finished with them.

All great ideas. I dont think anyone can really achieve what GM did with the concept though. It would have to be someone with a lot of resources or a lot of ingenuity.
Also, kga you are making great progress. The one thing everyone is missing, including your design, is the light diffusing all the way out towards the exterior of the car. So now, they still just look like rings. Last edited by RMGee; 12-10-2009 at 11:07 PM. |

Ironically, I saw a promo pic for the Camaro and used the "halo" design as the basis for my re-designed tail lights for the C5 corvette:
I originally used LEDs and acrylic rods, but later moved to LED strips to be more visible through the blackouts: It's hard to tell from your pictures, but if the red lens is flat, it would be best to replace it with red transparent acrylic. This will prevent diffusion of the LEDs making the "ring" appear sharper. |

Maybe this old test mule picture will help a little bit. I like the led rings I've seen, but I'd really love the lights off of this car.
