probably the way to do this is removing the dash, which is the number part of SERVICE MANUALS? I think I'm gonna need it.

Air bags, i don't like playing with them.

And there are 4 of them in the dash area.

Sorry trying to catch up now. Does the vent need to be removed to physically fit the hud unit? Or to reach the screws on the back of the mount. Would it be easier to fabricate a different mounting system and come in fro the top? Maybe hide a larger cut with a larger bezel? Damn it maybe I need to order the parts now so I can see.....

hud removal

I looked at mine with the I.P. cluster out. the duct looks like a one long piece, and service information looks like one long piece. even if you can loosen the ac duct with the dash in. I don't see how your going to manuver the duct so as to install the hud. Being the hud is so large a unit. there just isn't enough room. The best you could do is lift the dash and make more space between the duct and upper dash pad, but to do that you have loosen all the screws for dash anyway, might as well pull the whole thing. As for the air bag you have nothing to worry about. as long as you disconnect the car battery. I've worked on them for many years never had one go off. I suggest not touching any of the terminals static shock can set them off, but never seen it happen in the 15 years working on them. I would leave the air bag in the dash and pull it with it mounted in the dash if you can. It's not easy to release the plastic retainers all around the air bag. I've seen this style before and there a pain in the ass even with the dash out and removing the air bag, so with in the car really would suck. I wish I could be of more help but not ready to pull mine yet. hang in there ofer you'll get it.

Yes ac duct is the main obstruction to getting the hud in. and it might be difficult getting all the mount bolts to mount the hud to the dash without pull the dash. You can get some of the bolts from under the dash by steering column. I would cut the ac duct and reinstalling it after the hud is in before cutting a bigger whole in the dash pad. but doing either would be a hack job either way in my view.

Looks like the two screws are located in the opening to the defroster duct (see previous page of the manual, 10-86). It maybe necessary to remove the defroster duct to access the screws. If that's possible without removing the whole dash.
