The chassis is good in the Camaro, but in no way shape or form is the set up optimal for the strip. A live axle is ALWAYS the better choice hands down for those duties.
The current record holder and for the last several years in stock appearing muscle car class is not a F**d or a D****e it is a 69 Corvette complete with an independant rear suspension. This class includes all sorts of 426 hemi and 427, 428 ford stuff, so I think that the statement about strip use is moot point.

1) The mags, press, forums, the people who matter will shred this pig with negative feedback. I can see it now..."they tested it against the GT500...all this time coming out...and they still couldnt figure out how to put it on a diet...even if it beats it by a .1 or .2
2) Your direct competition can figure out how to keep a car under 3800 lbs (new 5.0) and keep it quiet, smooth, reliable (and faster than the ss) why cant you GM. STOP PLAYING CATCH UP!
3) My dad owns a cts-v. It is an absolute blast to drive...but you can definitely tell its a pig. If this new "top of the line badass Camaro" comes in weighing close to a 4 door sedan then...oh wait,it is based off a 4 door sedan already...lol
There are so many things wrong with the above that I'm not sure I can answer them all and not shut down the servers!

That ancient structure and single rear axle will hand a stock SS it's ass on the dragstrip.

That ancient tech on a good tire will OWN the current IRS set up in the Camaro.

I've driven 2 different GT500s that my friends own....a 10 and a 11...both cars haul the mail. 580 HP doesn't make the ZL1 the king guys....on paper or XBox it looks great, let's see how it plays out when the rubber meets the road.

You assume that everyone wants to go drag racing.

Not the case.

Please -- go and read the "thou shalt not" section of the GT-500 owner's manual.

The ZL1 is designed for all-out performance - especially on a road course.

Is GM going to honor warranty for people that actually use this car the way?

I'm new here. Might even be my first post. Joined because of the ZL1 and still want one regardless of weight rumors. I'm ecstatic about the power/tq announced but the numbers I'm waiting for will be from the track and strip. I've been buying and modifying GM muscle cars since 1994 (stroked/SC/turbo; 3 Fbods, 3 vettes, 2 GTOs) and not since the Z06 have I seen GM put this much effort and pride into a vehicle. I drive a '08 Z06, and it is perhaps the perfect car. If this ZL1 is half as well thought out, regardless of weight, I promise it will blow us and the critics away.
The bloated CTS-V is 4300lbs in sedan form. In Road and Track August 2011, it beat the 3870lbs 2011 GT500 to 60 by 0.2sec and in the qtr by 0.1sec in a head-to-head comparison. It stopped 2 ft shorter from 60mph, beat it thru the 700 ft slalom, AND got better mielage. I am not worried at all about this ZL1's chances!
I plan to deal with the weight by ordering options intelligently, removing useless bits and parts, and considering replacing heavy parts, especially ones that also increase rotational inertia (carbon fiber driveshaft anyone?), and not being fat. Dont forget there is a rumor of a "track package" which is code for down-contented and light weight. Headers, pulley, blower snout,160 Tstat have been good for 50-75hp on other LSA and LS9 motors.
BTW, Corvettes ARE for girls. If i wanted to pick up boys I'd drive a Mustang. I have a spare '07 6spd convertible for sale now if you like girls too.

Dont get me wrong. This car looks amazing. It has all the parts to make it a great car. I just hope the weight is kept down. I have been in the zl1 section since the beginning waiting patiently. I want to buy this car, I just have a hard time waiting this long for a car to come out to only be trumped by FORD yet again. PROVE ME WRONG GM! Please

My brother owns a 2011 5.0. I have been a diehard gm fanboy my whole life, but I can appreciate fast cars. I think Ford got it right...minus putting a cheap manual tranny in it. We took his car to the strip the other night. Do you want to know what it weighs? 3680 without him in it! My f-body came in at 3370 without me in it! I don't even want to post the times he ran..against a new 2011 auto ss for that matter...it really put me in my place

I already asked this question to my dealer with regards to the ZL1 & Z06.

The answer was not a chance in hell.

Do you own a 5th gen even?

I do....and have been to the track in every phase of my build with mine.

I can tell you flat out the Mustang OWNS the SS out of the box at the strip.

Dealers clearly know what is going on, I mean, they were the ones that let us know that none would be going to Canada and there would be a limited run of 500.
