I think what he was saying is GM expected to sell that many autos why didn't they offer autos from the beginning.

My answer to that is look at all the buz they got out of not revealing the auto right away even tho they showed an auto in a text mule.

This could have been predicted IMO. If you look back at the poll that was done on here awhile back twice as many people wanted to see the auto option be available than not.

Wanting the option available isn't the same as saying they want an automatic, though. They want it for folks that would prefer it, as opposed to manual only. I'm sure Chevy is basing their estimates on the percent of Camaros sold with the automatic transmissions, maybe with a little extra from the GT500 folks that would rather an auto than a manual.

No, not at all.. in fact quite the opposite (it was a typing error, i put "didn't" instead of "did")

Most manufacturers in cases like this would look at the sales figures for both transmissions and take that in to account when building a new model, so to maximize it's market potential. This scenario suggests that GM didn't do that at the beginning.

My 80+ year old grandmother drives a manual Mustang. Does that mean manuals are grandmother's cars?

They won't even be "rare" to start with. ZL1's are (most likely) going to be mass produced just like the GT500 was. So that chevy can make a lot of $$$. More cars=more money.

And with all the hype around them, they are going to sell like hotcakes on a Sunday morning.

New Generations of Automatics

To be honest with you, I'd trust the auto in the new ZL1. My 69 427 has a T400 and its a blast to 2 Foot drive. Its more "predictable" through the RPM range. My '11 has the gears.

When my dealer calls me when orders are acceptable, I have no problem saying, "yes, I said make it an automatic"

Just history repeating itself, over half of the original ZL-1's were automatic too!

Little history lesson for ya

I also swapped the body for a C2 Z28. (In short I traded it for three cars, a Corvette Z06r, a C2 Camaro Z28, and a Cadillac CTS Summer Performance package 3.6L DI with Aisin 6spd.)
