Flash Drive

I was wondering what would happen if I leave the flash drive in all the time? Does it take energy from the battery? I don't know much about flash drives and this is the first time using it in a car.

No. You can leave it in forever and it'll be fine.

Putting music files on a USB thumb drive and inserting into the USB slot in the console to listen to through the radio.

In my car when I turn it on and it was playing something else it will switch to the thumb drive on its own. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Has anyone figured out a way to get good sound quality from a thumb drive? I get the best sound quality from the I Pod but I can't switch the songs unless I do it on the I Pod itself. I would much rather use a thumb drive. It is just not as loud. Example using the same song downloaded to the thumb drive, to the I Pod, and on a CD. All downloaded or copied from the same source with the same settings. I set the stereo to 10, for example, and the I Pod and CD sound just fine but with the thumb drive it only sounds like it is on 4 or 5. Does that make sense? Hopefully everyone is not confused and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would start with trying another brand of flash drive. Sandisk seems to deliver the best results for audio and/or video. If that fails to make a difference, it may be that GM has different settings for flash drives vs the other sources.

A decent aftermarket amplifier will allow you to compensate for this. I rarely have to turn my volume up past 20 for it to sound fantastic. YMMV.

flash drives don't have batteries so not a huge concern for me, MP3 players like an Ipod worry me, had one plugged in last summer for a while but just don't feel comfortable leaving it in there with scortching hot tempts

I'd never leave any portable electronic device in a car. Your just asking for a battery to explode.

On a different note has anyone figure out the best way to store/organize music on the flash drive? Including audio encoding types and all? I'm trying to get the highest quality music I can in my car, and for the MP3's I can't re-rip to lossless i'm ok with that, but all the CD's I do have I'd like to get full quality with WAV/FLAC/ALAC. I'd also like to figure out the playlist thing. I can't seem to get playlists I create on my computer to work. Only ones I create in the car.

Rip your music to 320k mp3. The best sounding encoder for mp3 is LAME (which isn't): http://lame.sourceforge.net/

Even golden-eared audiophiles can't tell the difference between 320k LAME and 1440k cd audio rips in double-blind testing. It also appears that GM has made it impossible to play aiff or wav files from any usb drive (at least in 2010-12 models).

There is a post on C5 which explains how to get playlists working on windoze. Here's the Mac version that I figured out:

_ Open iTunes
- Export Playlist As ... choose M3U
- Open the file with textedit and remove the address of mp3 all that is before the folder / volumes / nome_usb /

EXAMPLE: to:
/ Users / Tim / Music / iTunes / iTunes Media / Music / Nightwish / Century Child/01 Bless The Child.mp3
to:
Nightwish / Century Child/01 Bless The Child.mp3
(you can change them all via the "Find and Replace" in TextEdit,
looking for: / Users / Tim / Music / iTunes / iTunes Media / Music /
and replacing with "nothing")

EXAMPLE:
#EXTINF:304,TI03 Wine Of Aluqah - Therion
Therion\4 Vovin\TI03 Wine Of Aluqah.mp3

- Replace / with \
(you can change them all via the "Find and Replace" in TextEdit,
looking for:
and replacing with \)

- Save
_ Put the. M3u file on the USB drive (not inside any folders)

test it
