We could smell it yesterday in Columbia, MD! The great Dismal Swamp. Sounds like something right out of the Princess Bride. Are there ROUSs in this swamp?

No where close to putting it out . News channel reported that a lightening strike caused it a few weeks back and even with the little rain we have received its burning under ground . Up to six feet deep which causes the tree roots to burn ! They are just tryin to contain it now by pumping lake and swamp water into surrounding ditches .
You can see the smoke through out our shop here in the shipyard !!

It's that guy

LMFAO You virginia folks are funny. One little fire and it's like "OMGWTF". I'm from New Mexico where forest fires are a dime a dozen and containment is never acceptable (living in a high desert=no water to fight fires). This little bit of haze isn't bad...YET!

I heard those types of fires are hard to fight. When I lived in Florida, this county would get the fires and it would go on forever.

Hopefully Irene is being sent to deal with it for you guys. Drove through the area last week. I could see the billows of smoke coming up after we passed the burning area. Hopefully that is all Irene messes up.

Is the fires out yet? Did the two mega storms put out the fires?

Not completely. there are still a few hot spots. That peat burn way underground is hella hard to put out. People used to heat their homes w/ that stuff..
