A6 clunks when shifting into 1st

Okay, I posted this in the transmission section, but no luck. I've noticed that my car seems to do a really hard shift into 1st gear when slowing down in tapshift mode. It only does it in M (not S or D). It seems to shift into 1st, then I feel a clunk just as the car is coming to a stop. Any thoughts?

I think it depends on what speed you are shifting down to 1st gear. In my TSX, if I drop down to first at speed higher than 25 mph, it does a hard drop. The TSX is a 5 speed Auto.

When I test drove the 1LT, I noticed the same thing, it seems like the speed threshold is 10-15 mph on the 1LT. If this is happening at 10-15 mph in your car, then my point is moot, otherwise you may be downshifting too soon.

Actually, it doesn't do it when I downshift myself. It only seems to happen when the car does it for you.

Yeah, I know. I've been putting off getting it checked out. It's such a pain being without a car. Guess I need a spare!

Okay, I took it in. The guy from the shop drove it around with me. He says that it is normal due to the manual mode being programmed for hard shifts like an auto with a shift kit on it. Not sure I believe him since not everybody seems to have this sound. I don't think they know much about the car yet, so they are BS'ing until they get up to speed.

It's fine. You're probably just downshifting at too high of a speed, which is easy to do considering redline is ~37 mph.

I took mine in for a check on this as well. It is only noticable in TAPShift mode and downshift from 2-1 when the car is slowing. It is relative to several items: how fast decelerating, engine rpms, speed at which downshift occurs, etc. It doesn't always happen, however when it does, you KNOW it!

The problem lies in the transmission's programming, according to the tech that I consulted with (20+ years exp.). Downshifting 2-1 point is not identical to the upshift 1-2 point, and is much more noticable as a result than say the 3-2 downshift. The tech said this is normal, albeit harsh. It would have been nice if the 2-1 downshift was just omitted. Perhaps collective bargaining (complain about this!!) will push GM to get an updated transmission tune for us. As far as I know, it only affects V6 A6 vehicles.

I've noticed this as well, but I haven't worried about it much since I normally run S.
