With the side dump plates removed, it sounds badass with either the street or track key. I ran with the red key and the difference in throttle response is immediately noticeable. Okay, PSA, take all those fun little Car and Driver lightning laps at VIR with a grain of salt if you are trying to compare them across the years.

Take a look at some of the results. There are some identical cars that have run several seconds different from year to year.

- In the 2006 Lightning lap the GT500 ran a 3:11 in 2007 the GT500 ran a 3:05... exact same car, different days, 6 second difference.

- In 2006 the Z06 ran 3:01 then 2:58 in 2007 same spec Z06... also in 2010 the Corvette GS ran a 2:58... faster than a Z06 in 2006. How is that possible considering the GS and Z06 have the exact same basic suspension, is heavier than a Z06, and has ~70 less hp than a Z06.

- In 2006 the BMW 335i ran a 3:10.5, but later the 335is (more power and better handling) ran over 3 seconds slower at 3:13.8

Now some cars like the Mazda Speed 3, and BMW M3 are very consistent on the different Lightning Laps, which makes the results even more chaotic and unreliable in my opinion.

Lets not get too wrapped around magazine times.
