Let the fun begin - 3.91 gear swap

Updated - go to post #8 for details.

The 3.91 gear set arrived today - thank you Maureen @ Rogers Chevy! The diff and the gear set are headed to the mechanic tomorrow to do he swap. Then bolt her up, do the break in and let her rip! Can't wait.

Stay tuned........

Here's a funny: The wife came in from the garage today and asked "why is your engine laying on your workbench?"

Here are some GM specs from my swap and a few other tips that might help. Good Luck

Thanks - I've read your thread on your gear swap and it helped to inspire me to do this mod.

Not sure. The diff you see is from a friend who kept his stock diff after he did a complete diff change. I'm going to use his diff for the gear swap, put it in my car and then give him back my stock diff to make him whole. He said it took him four hours by himself to remove and replace the diff.

Thanks - I have read your thread too! The torque specs will be helpful. I'm not as ambitious as you. I'm just going to remove and replace the diff and let a GM master mechanic do the actual gear swap inside the diff. Everything else is staying stock including the bushings.

If I was quick of mind and tongue I should have replied - "Yes, honey its an engine and its all that's left of that ricer Honda the Camaro gobbled up on the way home!"

Update: Gears are in. Tune updated. Break-in underway. So far so good. I really like how the gears compliment the cam. The cam's torque curve, the tranny gears and this axle ratio were made for each other.

Once I'm comfortable all is good and ready I'll report back after I let 'er rip through the gears.

I've had my 3.91's now for a month or 2 and so far so good! I love the added torque and it goes like hell now! I can't wait to compliment my gears with a cam next year....maybe, I hope....if the budget can stand anymore!

So many questions but I'll limit myself to a couple:
Looking at your sig just what are Ron and the boys doing for ya now?

With all that power your adding a 3.91 gear? wow!

I hear ya about the budget thing. I shudder when I think how much I've spent on this car until I fire her up and back out of the garage - then the shudder turns into . Go get that cam just as soon as you can. Our cars once cammed beg for these gears and you're half way there.
