Cool L99 Ticking sound

I just got back from the dealer, they just replaced the whole rug in the car due to it not fitting right on the driver side. They said that it was not cut right and became distorted. I also tols them about a ticking noise that I was getting from the engine when it was cold. I told the service manager before about this and he told me that all LS engines make that noise when they are cold, that it was piston slap because they have to set the clearances a little lose because it was an aluminum engine. Well now there is a new service bullitin about this, and I will quote right from the sevice order: Tech found bullitin for new lifter for ticking condition, tech started veh cold and could hear a short duration tick type noise coming from upper engine area. Tech checked for bullitins and found: PIP4499E in bullitin it states if a short duration tick noise is experienced on cold start, updated AFM lifters will most likely be needed to repair the noise, but they will not be available until August 2010. This P.I. will be updated with additional information as soon as they are available. . Tech attempted to order or put customer on waiting list for new desing liffters but parts department can not do that at this time. Customer will have to return some time in August. I talked to the sevice manager last month when I got the oil changed and told him that the L 99 engine had differant liffter in four cylinders due to the AFM which he did not know. I told the service writter that this time I was there and asked him to see if there were any sevice bullitins on it. I have had my car since the first week of June last year and I live in up state New york, when it started to get cold the car sounded like it had a bad cam in it, this lasted until the car warmed up. It was really embarrasing to start the car up in front of other people. The service writer told me to call the first week in August to check on the new liffer staus.

Mine was built in Dec 2009 and it HAS the ticking sound when it first starts up. I think there are other threads on this site discussing the ticking sound.

Thanks for the info. I will keep this one for future reference.

mine was build in April of 2010 and every once in a while has the lifter-tick noise... same sound that I had in my 1976 Nova with 368k miles on it.

looks like I have something else to talk to my service manager about.

Thanks!

I like to think of it as a nervous tick. The engine is just antsy before we get in and roar down the road...
