"Peak" horsepower is only part of the equation. The Ford V8 (which looks to be a bit underrated as well) will make significantly more torque and have a broader powerband than the DI V6.

I mean, are they sticking their heads in the sand and ignoring the Camaro hoping it's going to go away, or are they lamenting the fact that it puts them to shame, or are they in denial saying that the Camaro is too good to be true, or are they bagging on the Camaro for feeble reasons?

It would be very interesting to see if they are scared and how they are reacting.
A lot of them hate it. Some of them for the style(which I love) and some are saying it's too heavy. I think there's a lot of denial going on.

I have a 2006 GT and I'm really torn. I used to be a Chevy guy but have had 3 Mustangs now. I will wait until the 2010 Stang comes out before I buy my next car but I can't imagine it being as good as this new Camaro. Maybe I'm just caught up in all the excitement with you guys. But the Camaro has the looks, the nicer interior, the big V8, IRS(I can't believe Ford can't do this, grr), etc. If the price is right I'm getting the SS.

it wouldnt suprise me to see them bring out a "special edition" (Nooo!!! not ford bringing out special edition mustangs!! thats so unlike them!!!) Boss mustang with north of 380 hp but for now, the mustang GT is the tortise in this comparison.
Ford is supposed to be coming out with a DI 5.0 making at least 400hp.....but not until 2011....we think. The Mustang will be lighter by 300-400lbs. It should be a good match once the 5.0 comes out.

Having test driven Mustangs and Camaros I personally think Camaros handle and perform better.
You can argue on engine potential, but those arguments are very complicated and difficult to prove. For example, if I can prove that a Camaro benefits more than a Mustang with a certain type of intake, then I can prove that GM designed the motor with more untapped potential in the intake of the car. To prove that one car has the most potential would require researching just about every horsepower-producing component and showing that one car has the most untapped potential.

Clearly, this argument would take a PhD in physics and would require way too much time, so I guess it makes sense that no one uses it.

I wasn't referring to anything like that, hence the STOCK part. I'm not talking about racing, track, drag, ect. I'm referring to the cars as they come off the factory floor.

If nothing else the Camaro should spur Ford into developing a better Mustang. Comeptition is a good thing for all consumers.

Not to suggest that GM is ahead of Ford on the technology scale... but im sure GM will have a formidable anwser for that problem way before it comes up
(if it even exists...)

And it would therefore be a heavier and more expensive mustang if it needs to change to "keep up" with the Camaro, content and technology wise...

Actually, how many air bags does the Mustang currently have and what are the crash ratings?

Why would you chop a camaro from Alabama? Why not ATL? or Miami beach? or San Diego, where people do stuff to their cars to increase impressiveness.
