CAMS..on a L99, please chime in..

look for a small cam for my l99.. nothing too crazy just a few extra horsepower for track time
but i have been reading about how the valve timing on these cars diff from the ls3...
i read there is phase limiter etc (im by far not familiar with any of this)

so my question is... what do you recommend?
i was looking at the GMPP cam that is very conservative in terms of daily driving, rpm surging etc etc.. but how do i go about the phaser...

what do i need to do? what to order? tune?

let me know your thoughts..

Im not sure but i think that GMPP cam is only for LS3's not the L99's i could be wrong if anyone knows chime in plz. IMO i would talk to the guys at New Era performance they are doing great things with the VVT cars!I myself am waiting on Texas Speed to start working on their VVT cams they do great work!

Also check out Mast, they are the only shop I've seen do anything L99/VVT specific.

Mast Motorsports has a great selection of cams for the L99. I think the stage 1 cam does not even require new lifters which meens you dont have to remove the heads for install. Call Mast, they will hook you up with what you are looking for.

I don't think that the industry really knows which way they want to go with this new tech. I called livernois and Speedinc both suggested deleting DOD and VVT. That pretty expensive since you would need to pull the heads, replace 4 lifters, an Ls2 valley cover, cam sprockets and chain tensioner. Basically making it an Ls3. I called mast today and they want I believe around 650+ for the stage 1 Cam and their "specially matched springs" for their cams. When you are done with labor and a new torque converter then a tune to just cam your car, you are wellllll into the 2.5k 3k plus mark.

Then you can just add a stage 1 cam with the phaser and valve springs but who knows what kind of cam lobes with what kind of ramp rates they use? Will the 4 dod lifters hold up? Will I have enough PTV clearance when the VVT advances or retards? The tuners in my area are not too experienced with this stuff. That is Alot to ponder when you got a brand new car!!

Hopefully someone can chime in and "LEARN ME" lol about this stuff! What ever happened to goodold LS advantages of just pulling out the cam? Lol

We have some L99 stuff in testing, be a little bit more patient & I think you will come out better in the long run. There's limits to the parts GM puts in the valvetrain that needs to be tested before I feel comfortable knowing somethings going to work for us & make the best possible power.

I looked around alot and Livernois Motorsports seems to have the best from very mild to bumpen'.
They area mentioned in several chevy build articles and I have even talked to some of the guys. They are on thier game. Here are some of the links to thier cams. I am going with the 1C.

I do beleive no matter what cam you go for your going to need to tune afterwords. I would diffently talk to the guys before doing it. Rick (screen name: Rick@Livernois) is on the board alot. PM him.

Well I agree they have L99 cams and stuff but they were pointing me in the direction of deleting my VVT and DOD with a 4500k!! KIT! thats absurd. Might as well S/C that bitch with 2k more. But there is nothing like a sound of a cammed 376 CU symphony.

Jason thanks for sharing that info, I hope that those 4 lifters are robust and wont need replacing.

Steel singer, yes I agree a tune is always good to maximize your mods.



On another note: Patrick G shared some info with me about getting 1.85 rockers, essentially increasing the lift to
.544 lift intake? and .535 lift exhaust? ( I hope my calculations are correct). Good for 13 hp on a L76 6.0 G8 so maybe a little more for the L99 since the cam is a little bigger?

I am not trying to highjack but if we have to wait maybe we can start getting our parts together so when "they build them, we will come".

I'm building a VVT 6.2L equipped swap car now and have been researching this like crazy. The big issue in making great power isnt the VVT, in fact if its tuned properly theoretically it should make the same top end power as an LS3 with more low end because of the ability to adjust cam phasing. Basically VVT means the cam retards as the engine RPM goes up. Lots of retard = screaming top end. When RPM lowers the cam \ advances respectively. These parameters are controlled by the PCM and fully tunable too which is great and theres lots of power potential there even stock as the cam timing is set by the factory mainly for fuel mileage not tuned for peak power.

In short; Lots of advance = tons of torque, Lots of retard = tons of top end. Being able to have BOTH? Get the idea?

Not all is currently roses however as theres two HUGE issues at hand right now that seems to have everyone baffled. This is all stuff i've read on many many message boards and pieced together what makes sense at this point based on reputable board members/sponsors opinions so if this info isnt 100% dont scream at me Im only trying to help spread some info thats current as of now.

1. AFM. Active fuel management and VVT are two completely separate systems do not confuse the two. AFM lifters are less than ideal for big lift cams it seems. They just dont seem to be able to handle the big load of high valve springs that are required when running big cams. This is the biggest issue with stock L99 cam swaps PERIOD. Furthermore GM apparently has some kind of patent on the AFM lifter design preventing the aftermarket from building a hi-perf set to swap out with. So for the time it appears that the only safe option on any decent sized cam swap is going to require AFM delete and removing the 4 AFM lifters and replacing them with 4 new stock non AFM units. Keeping the stick VVT system is fine however and should make the engine outperform a comparably cam'd non VVT equipped engine so good news there. That said VVT cam research is really just getting off the ground so as noted above a little patience is probably your best friend here while the aftermarket figures out exactly how to extract the most out of these VVT phasers and what lift/lobes/duration works best.

2. VVT phaser. The stock VVT phaser looks to be the weak link in the VVT system thus far. They just dont seem to last with big dual valve springs and big cams. So selecting a cam that doesnt require monstrous dual valve springs is also important. For the time being that is... Im smelling a completely new aftermarket phaser on the horizon or at least an upgraded version that will not suffer these ills and then we're good to go. In the meantime if you NEED a cam then I'd shy away from going too big for the time being and select a cam that can get by with single coil beehives. Besides theres lots of threads recently coming up with smaller cams making bigger power through LS3 heads so this isnt all that bad. Search Justin Timberlake cam over at tech. A quote from a tech member "The JT cam is so named because although its small like JT is, They can both still go around ****ing anything they want to"

Thats about all thats different between a regular LS3 and an L99 so there are some hurdles that need to be crossed before everyones on board with this. In the meantime New Era has done a good job R&D'ing cams for the L99 and can hook you up today if your ready to go.

If your a handy owner and want to go at this yourself? I'd steer clear of the current cam offerings off the shelf and get a custom grind done. Contact PatrickG or Geoff at EPS and they'll take care of you.

I'm still hunting down info so if anyone has more to add I'd like to hear it.
