Mafia Game signup/explaination

ok, i got some feedback on a forum game called Mafia. Basics of the game is, there are a group of people that belong to a fake town. You have pro town and people in the mafia. Mafia members are chosen randomly. The pro town folks have a doctor and a cop to help them out. They too, are picked randomly. There are two phases to this game. Day phase (no correlation to real day time, could last a week) where everyone will chat in the forum and try to lynch one of their members, hoping its someone in the mafia, and Night phase, which is when people that have a night action, PM me their action. Those people include the Mafia (Godfather), and the cop and doctor. The rest of the pro town do nothing during the night phase, except hope they don't get killed by the mafia.

A lynch occurs when the majority of the town votes on someone. Once the lynching is complete (when i do a write-up of the situation), the day phase will be over, and no chatting is permitted, until the mod (me) gives further instruction that it is day phase.

Everybody, PLEASE BOLD ALL YOUR VOTES OR UNVOTES. Example: vote poormanscamaro or unvote poormanscamaro

i will answer all questions the best i can.

So far we have:

1. bhall
2. ibeck
3. shardik
4. 66olds
5. insidethreat07
6. swat
7. nyrfan
8. overflow
9. bowtiebelle
10. Mysteek

Ok, i'll ellaborate a little further, as there seems to be some confusion. remember, you can PM me any specific questions.

I am the moderator of the game. This is what will happen. I will open a new game thread. I will open it by telling a story of some sort to get the ball rolling. and let everyone know that Day 1 has started. Please don't post in that game thread until i say so. I need to reserve a few of the first posts for important things like who has been killed, links to certain pages so it's easier to get to.

Once the day begins, everyone will start posting/chatting. Trying to figure out who the town wants to lynch. Day 1 is ALWAYS the toughest, as there's not a lot of info to be given out. Win condition for the town is when all mafia threats have been lynched during the day phases. Mafia wins when they outnumber the pro town players. Mafia will decide to kill one person per night phase.

If you are chosen to be mafia, i have created a subgroup that is invite only. mafia is allowed to talk to each other in that subgroup whenever they want. The rest of the people can only talk in the game thread during day phases only.

Once you are dead, you can no longer post in the game thread.

The cop and the doctor are the only pro town people that have night actions. meaning, when it's the night phase, you will PM me who you would like to investigate, or protect/heal. depending on your role. Everyone else is considered a Vanilla Townie.

After the first game, i'll start introducing more power roles that have night actions. Once all players with a night action have given me what they want to do for that night, i will compile a story of what happened during the night, who died, maybe a clue here or there, and then the day phase will continue, and everyone will start chatting again and decide who you want to lynch for that day.

Mafia only knows who they are. they do not know who the doctor or cop is. The town will not know who anyone is.

Everyone, please be active in the game. by active, i mean post at least once per day phase. Seems like this group is on the camaro5 a lot anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem. lol

anyone that is inactive, or can't play anymore, may be mod killed and replace, if anyone else wants to join in. Just let me know if you are too busy, or can't get to a computer, etc.

Here is a large list of possible roles for future games. I'll put this list in other places as well. And will narrow the list of possible roles for each individual game...enjoy the reading!

Pro-Town Roles

Basic Town Roles

Vanilla Townie: The Vanilla Townie is the basic role for the forces of good. During the day, the Vanilla Townie is involved with the discussion and vote to try to lynch the mafia. A Vanilla Townie has no abilities other than the abilities to think and vote, and can not communicate with other players outside of the game. To win the game, the Vanilla Townie must help eliminate all mafia and anti-town roles.

Cop: During the day, the Cop is involved with the discussion and vote to try to lynch the mafia. Each night the Cop can investigate another player to find out if the are pro-town or anti-town. The cop wins the game if all mafia and anti-town roles are eliminated. Various variations are listed below in the Investigative Roles list.

Doctor: During the day, the Doctor is involved with the discussion and vote to try to lynch the mafia. Each night the Doctor can choose one player to save from a night kill. The Doctor generally can't save himself. To win the game, the doctor must help eliminate all mafia and anti-town roles. Various variations are listed below in the Protective Roles list.

Roleblocker: During the day, the Roleblocker is involved with the discussion and vote to try and lynch the mafia. Each night the Roleblocker can choose one player and prevents that player from performing his night action (if any). The Roleblocker wins the game if all mafia and anti-town roles are eliminated. Various variations to the Roleblocker role are listed below in the Protective Roles list.

Vigilante: During the day, the Vigilante is involved with the discussion and vote to try and lynch the mafia. Each night the Vigilante can choose one player and kills that player during the night. According to some variations, the Vigilante may have only a limited number of kills, or may have abilities similar to a Jack of All Trades (listed below). Various other variations to the Vigilante role are listed below in the Killing Roles list.

Investigative Town Roles

Backup Cop - Can investigate someone at night only when the other town cop is dead. When the other cop dies, sometimes he gets the results of the prior cop's investigations. In one variation, the backup cop can investigate only to try to find the cop and if he investigates the cop, he is told who the cop is. If he investigates anyone else, then he gets no information.

Census Taker - Has the ability to take a census of alignments in play. The Census Taker can receive information about how many of each alignment are in the game. This is generally a one-shot ability. In another variation, the Census Taker may have a one-shot ability to check his assumptions about player alignments. This player sends the Moderator a PM listing all players and the suspected alignment of all players. The Moderator returns a number of how many players overall are correctly aligned. In any variation, the Census Taker will not learn who is of each alignment or what role they are.

Crystal Ball - Has a crystal ball and chooses a number each night. Based on the chosen number, the Crystal Ball finds out different information each night. The Crystal Ball may or may not know beforehand what each number does.

Day Cop - Like a regular cop, but can investigate someone during the day, and is told whether they are pro-town or anti-town. Generally, when a Day Cop is present, there is at least one preventative role (e.g., 24 Hour Jailer or Mafia Roleblocker with 24 hour blocking ability) so that the Day Cop isn't immune to being blocked.

Diviner - Can select one role at night, and is told whether or not someone in the town has that role. This could also be a mafia role.

DNA Expert - Each night, the DNA Expert can either examine a murder scene to find DNA evidence of the killer, or can attempt to get a DNA sample off a person in the town to see if it matches up with any of the murders you have a record of.

Dream Cop - Can select one person at night. During the night, the Dream Cop has a dream in which the person's affiliation and/or role is revealed. May not directly receive information, but may instead get a clue to help determine that person's role.

Dream Tracker - Can select one person at night. During the night, the Dream Tracker has a dream in which it is revealed who the target visits during the night. The Dream Tracker may also get clues to help determine the target's role.

FBI Agent - Tracks down a serial killer (e.g., cannibal, psychopath, arsonist, knife wielding, etc). Until the serial killer is dead, the FBI Agent can only identify the serial killer. After the serial killer dies, the FBI Agent becomes a regular cop.

Flavor Cop - As with a regular cop, investigates a person each night. Instead of getting "pro-town" or "anti-town" results, gets some information about the person (e.g., may find a gun but not know if mafia, vigilante, etc.), so person is forced to use logic to deduce the player's role.

Forensic Investigator - Can investigate one dead person at night. Finds out everyone who targeted the dead person throughout the game but not the action each took (also not necessarily in order). This role may be limited as a one or two-shot ability.

Friendly Neighbor - Player has a limited number of messages (usually one) and can send a message to another player to have the mod-confirm their pro-town status. May choose a player, and that player is sent a message along the lines of "X wishes to express appreciation for your commitment to the town. He is pro-town."

Insane Cop - Can investigate someone at night, but receives incorrect results. As a result, the Insane Cop will always find mafia and serial killers to be pro-town and townies to be anti-town.

Lie Detector - Can choose one person at night. Is told whether that person lied the prior day. In one variation, the Lie Detector is not told what the lie was. In another alternative, the Lie Detector may choose a specific statement and determine if the statement was true or false.

Line Tapper - Can choose one person a night and tap into that person's telephone line. From that information they will be able to tell whether they talked to anyone during the night. It could be possible to give the Line Tapper information about everyone that the target talked to, but to avoid making the role too powerful, they would likely only get information: (a) that they talked to someone else (indicating they are likely mafia, cult, or mason); or (b) the name of one person they talked to during the night.

Mortician - Can choose a dead person and obtain the person's true role, no matter how the role is disguised. May be particularly useful for no-reveal games, or games where there is a tailor or a mafia janitor. In some variations, the mortician may be able to use the ability each night, or be limited on actions (e.g., takes 2 nights to fully examine any body).

Naive Cop - Can investigate someone at night, and always finds them to be pro-town.

Paranoid Cop - Can investigate someone at night, and is always finds them to be anti-town.

Psychic - Can read the mind of one person at night. May be able to find out different things about the target. For example, the Psychic may be able to determine the person's role, who they are targeting, what they plan on doing during the night, who they plan on talking to, etc. Usually can only find out one piece of information. That information may be the same each time, or it may be random as to what information they obtain. This may be a town role, a mason role, or a mafia role. If part of the mason or mafia groups, the Psychic may obtain the results before the rest of the mason/mafia group has to decide on a night action.

Role Cop Can choose one person each night. The role cop will investigate that person and find information about that person's role. The role cop sometimes will be told what the role is directly. (also known as flavour cop)

Sensor - Can detect how many anti-town players were on a lynch bandwagon the previous day. Usually has limited number of times ability can be used (often one).

Tracker - Can investigate one person at night. Finds out who that person visits during the night.

Watcher - Can investigate one person at night. Finds out who visited/targeted their selected person during the night.

Protective Town Roles

Backup Doctor - The Backup Doctor has power to protect one person each night, but those powers don't become effective until the town doctor is killed. Sometimes, the Backup Doctor will have the ability to also save the doctor, but won't initially know who the doctor is. The Backup Doctor may or may not know he is the Backup.

Bodyguard - The Bodyguard can choose one person each night and if that person is targeted to be killed, the Bodyguard will be killed instead. According to some variations, the Bodyguard may not automatically be killed (e.g., may be a 50% chance of dieing, a 25% chance of killing the attacker, and a 25% chance of fighting off the attacker and learning the attacker's identity.)

Bulletproof - Wears a bulletproof vest that prevents him from being killed during the night. The vest may provide permanent protection against night kills, or may only last for a few attempts (e.g., vest ineffective after second shot).

Bus Driver - Can select two people at night. Their locations are switched and anything that would have happened to the one, happens to the other instead. Could also be a mafia role.

Commuter - Can leave town at night, and is immune from nightkills during that night. The Commuter generally cannot leave town on consecutive nights.

CPR Doctor - Can choose one person to protect each night. If that person is targeted, the CPR Doctor saves him. If that person is not targeted, the CPR Doctor kills the person. May or may not know he is a CPR Doctor.

Elite Bodyguard - Can choose one person each night, and if that person is targeted to be killed, then the Elite Bodyguard and the killer will both be killed. Protection may extend for night or may be day and subsequent night.

Faith Healer - Like a doctor, but only has a 50% chance of being effective.

Hider - Hides behind someone else, and can't be found if he is targeted. If the person he's hiding behind is killed, then the hider also dies. May also die if he chooses to hide behind a mafia member.

Insane Doctor - Can choose one person each night. That person is protected by the Insane Doctor 50% of the time, and the other 50% of the time the Insane Doctor kills that person.

Jailer - Can choose one person each night. The targeted person is put in jail and is prevented from performing their night action, and is also protected from night actions that would have affected the targeted person. In one variant, the Jailer may operate during the day, such that the person is effectively kidnapped (and appears to have been killed), but then returns the next day.

Mediator - Can roleblock or protect someone at night, but not both. This ability is limited by the person's voting record during the day. If the Mediator has a vote recorded when the day ends, then the Mediator can't do anything during the night. The Mediator can only vote for someone and roleblock/protect if they unvote before the day ends.

Naive Doctor - Like a Doctor, the Naive Doctor can choose one person each night to protect. This person believes he can protect people, but he actually has no protective powers.

Prostitute - See Roleblocker

Protector - A Protector can choose one person each night to protect. A barrier is placed around the home of the target so that any actions targeting that person fail.

Psychiatrist - Can choose one person to evaluate each night. If that person is a serial killer (e.g., knife wielding, cannibal, arsonist, psychopath, etc.) then the serial killer is cured and becomes a regular townie. The Psychiatrist then also becomes a regular doctor. NOTE: A different role may also have the Psychiatrist label, see Shrink.

Reviver - Can bring dead players back from the dead. Because of the power involved, the role may have significant limits. For example, this person may be able to bring only one person back from the dead during the game. May also be a sacrificial position so that if the Reviver revives someone, he dies.

Shrink - Can choose one person each night. That person cannot be recruited/converted during that night (e.g., Mason can't recruit, Cult can't convert, Mafia can't recruit, etc.).

Tour Guide - Selects one person at night and allows them to visit any other location. In essence, this allows a person that is chosen to watch another player at night and let them see anyone who also goes there. Generally, the person cannot choose himself to be the watcher or the watched person. May also be a roleblocker/protector attribute so that the person taken on the tour cannot be targeted and/or cannot perform their own actions.

Town Drunk - See Roleblocker

Weak Doctor - Like a regular doctor, the Weak Doctor can protect someone each night, but the Weak Doctor dies if he tries to protect mafia. In some variations, he may convert to a mafia member if he tries to protect a mafia member and/or if the mafia targets him during the night. In some cases, a weak doctor may in effect be a Faith Healer and only have a 50% chance of saving the person he tries to protect.

White Mage - Can choose to protect one person at night, and that protection will last 2 nights, so that person will not die if attacked on either of those two nights.

Killing Town Roles

Bomb - If the Bomb is lynched, he kills the person who cast the final vote on him. In some cases the person who is killed is the accuser casting the first vote. In another case, everyone who votes for the Bomb dies.

Daytime Vigilante - A killer on the town's side that only kills during the day. He kills publicly by announcing "Daykill: X" in the game thread.

Granny - See Paranoid Gun Owner

Hunter - See Vengeful Townie.

Military Vet - A gun owner on the town's side that kills anyone who tries to kill him during the night.

Overeager Vigilante - A killer on the town's side that must choose someone to kill each night.

Paranoid Gun Owner - A gun owner on the town's side, he kills anyone that visits him during the night, regardless of whether the person is investigating him or trying to kill him.

Saint - See Bomb.

Suicidal Townie - A townie that will commit suicide on night 1, and cannot do anything to stop it. In some variations, the suicidal townie may commit suicide at a different specified time instead of during night 1 (e.g., day 2, night 2, etc).

Townie with a Gun - See Paranoid Gun Owner

Vengeful Townie - After being lynched, he can choose to kill one person.

Other Town Roles

Actor - A regular townie, but can only cast a vote on someone if that vote is the last necessary to cause the person to be lynched.

Agent - Can send anonymous messages to another player (filtered through the Moderator), but typically isn't allowed to get any response back. Sometimes the messages can be sent to any player. In other cases, the messages are only forwarded to people with specific roles (e.g., only to mafia or serial killers).

Amnesiac - Starts off as a regular townie. Once during the game, the amnesiac may visit the graveyard and take over the powers of one person who has died during the game. May have some limits placed (e.g., can't choose a mafia role or a mason role). The assumed role may last the rest of the game or in other variations may have a limited duration.

Apprentice - See Sponge.

Beloved Princess - A regular townie, except that if she dies, the entire town will attend her funeral the next day. As a result, there will be no lynch on the next day and there will be two consecutive night phases.

Box Holder - The Box Holder has various boxes that he can put out into the open for the rest of the town to open. There may be restrictions on the number of boxes available and the Box Holder usually doesn't know what each box does.

Cutlery Expert - Can choose one person each night and has the ability to find out if they have a knife. In one variation he may also take the knife and strip the person of their powers temporarily or permanently.

Death Miller - A regular townie, but will appear to be anti-town when investigated, and still appears to be anti-town when he dies.

Doublevoter - Can cast two votes. Sometimes, a single vote in the forum will be used as two votes. Optionally, the Doublevoter can cast the two votes separately by sending one privately to the game moderator.

Fool - Can visit one person a night just for fun, but gets no information about the person. May not know he is a fool (e.g., may think he is a cop that just can't find any information each night).

Gambler - Has multiple abilities, but they can only be used on a town member. If he "gambles" and uses them on a mafia member, he is killed. For example, he may be able to protect, investigate, or hide. If he protects, investigates, or hides behind a mafia member, he is found and killed.

Governor - Can prevent a lynch from occurring. Generally, once enough votes for the lynch are in, the Governor is given a brief opportunity to tell the moderator to stop the lynch. If he uses his power, the lynch doesn't happen and the night begins (or it may be announced that the lynch failed and the day continues). In such a set-up, the Governor may only be able to stop a limited number of lynches (e.g., one, two, etc) or may only be able to stop the same person from being lynched once. In another variation, the Governor can select a person each night and that person is not able to be lynched the next day. There could be an announcement from the moderator that the person is immune from voting, or if there are enough votes to lynch that person, it may simply fail.

Gunsmith - Can choose one person each night and has the ability to find out if they have a gun. In one variation he may also take the gun and strip the person of their powers temporarily or permanently.

Hated Townie - A regular townie, but needs one vote less than the majority to be lynched.

Inventor - Is given a set of inventions that he can use (usually only once). He may or may not know what the inventions will do, and generally must pick someone to use the invention on.

Jack of All Trades - Has multiple abilities. For example, he may be able to investigate, protect, be a vigilante, roleblock, etc. In some variations, each ability may be used only a limited number of times (e.g., once or twice) or may be used any number of times so long as they are not on consecutive nights.

Lightning Rod - A townie where while he is alive, any night actions are directed to him. There are various variations. Sometimes the players may not be told that they were redirected (e.g., a cop investigating another may find "pro-town" information but not be told that he ended up investigating the Lightning Rod). In some cases, only some actions may be directed to the Lightning Rod (e.g., any actions by roleblocked players go to the Lightning Rod). In another alternative, the Lightning Rod can choose when/how to activate his abilities (e.g., if he suspects another will be killed, he can activate his abilities for the night, or may choose a person and have any actions affecting that person directed to him).

Magician - The magician has a one-shot ability to switch player's roles permanently during a game.

Mason - In a mason group with others. Knows who the other town masons are, and their roles, and can communicate with them privately outside of the game.

Miller - A regular townie, but will appear to be anti-town when investigated. When he dies, he is revealed to be on the town's side.

Nexus - If targeted during the night, the actions will be randomly deflected to someone else. In some variations, even if targeted during the day (other than by a lynch), the actions will be randomly deflected.

Politician - Can select one person and control that person's vote the next day.

Priest - A regular townie, but cannot cast a vote on someone if the vote would cause the person to be lynched. In one variant, the Priest can choose someone during the night to "convert". If that person is a mafia member, they are converted and become pro-town...although they don't know they have been converted until the end of the game, and the Priest don't know they have been converted (only the Mod knows). In this conversion variant, it may be a 1 or 2 shot ability only.

Recruiting Mason - Like a regular mason, he can communicate with other masons and knows who they are. He can also target town members to recruit into the masons. If he targets a mafia member, he will die.

Redirector - At night, the redirector redirects actions to a different person. In one alternative, the redirector selects a person and any actions affecting that person are directed to someone else (may be random, may be someone selected by the Redirector). In another alternative, the Redirector selects a person and any actions of that person are directed to someone other than intended. Could also be a role in the mafia.

Skitzo - Can select one person at night, and will randomly protect, investigate, kill, or do nothing.

Sponge - Can select one person at night, and will absorb/learn that person's abilities if there is a way to do so. There are lots of variations that may go into this. In one variation, the Sponge can target someone and then obtain any abilities that target has. From there on out, they can use their learning/sponge ability or a power they have absorbed/learned. Some abilities (e.g., killing roles, Miller, Governor, Princess, Commuter, Jailkeeper, etc.) may not be learned for one reason or another (e.g., would require tools that the Sponge doesn't have access to, requires a position in the community, etc.), so they user may only be told they were not able to absorb anything, or they may get information about the ability that they were not able to learn. A person with this role may also die if they choose a mafia member to target. Could also be a serial killer or mafia role.

Spy - Another name for a Traitor or Agent.

Stalker - The Stalker chooses one person (the Stalkee) to watch throughout the entire game. Each night, the Stalker watches that person and gets information on who they visited and who came to the Stalkee's house to visit him, but without any information about roles or alignment. If the Stalkee dies, the Stalker commits suicide the next night.

Thief - Can choose one person each night and steals an item related to that person's role (e.g., a gun, a knife, a magnifying glass, keys to a bus, etc.). Effect on the person the item is stolen from may last for a limited time (e.g., one or two nights) or it may be permanent.

Townie with a Loud Whistle - This person can watch one person each night. If someone tries to break into the target's house, the Townie with a Loud Whistle blows the whistle. The sound is so loud that the person then must either leave or must turn around and look at the source of the whistle. If the person leaves, then they don't accomplish what they set out to do. If they look at the whistle-blower, then the Townie with a Loud Whistle can see who was trying to break in.

Traitor - Starts as a town member, but knows who the mafia are and secretly tries to help their cause. If targeted by the mafia, he will become a mafia member. If investigated by the town, he will appear pro-town before he is converted, and anti-town after he is converted.

Voteless Townie - The Voteless Townie cannot vote, but can still contribute to the discussion and attempts to find the mafia. In one variation the Voteless Townie doesn't know his vote doesn't count.

Witch Doctor - As a master of Voodoo, the Witch Doctor can choose two people. Anything that happens to one person during the night will also happen to the other. The Witch Doctor may be able to only choose the two people at the start of the game, or may choose different people each night.

Mafia Roles

Basic Mafia Roles

Godfather - The Godfather is a mafia member that knows who the other mafia are. The Godfather can secretly talk with other mafia members, and the mafia can collectively determine a town member to kill at night. The Godfather, if investigated, appears to be pro-town. To win the game, the Godfather must help to eliminate pro-town and other anti-town roles not affiliated with the Mafia. The mafia wins when the number of Mafia members is equal to or greater than the number of town members AND any third party groups have been eliminated. In one variation the Godfather gets an additional kill, unknown to the rest of the mafia, and only wins if the Godfather survives to the end of the game.

Mafia Goon - A Mafia Goon is the most basic mafia role. The Goon knows who the other mafia members are and can talk with them outside of the game. The Mafia Goon also collaborates with the other mafia members to select a town member to kill at night, but otherwise has no special abilities.

Other Mafia Roles

Mafia Assassin - A mafia member that can kill independently of the rest of the mafia. There are lots of different variations. In some variations, he can kill during the day (once per day, and possibly only a limited number of times throughout the game). In other variations he kills at night. In still other variations he is trained in different methods of killing, and can shoot, stab, poison, bomb, etc. his victim.

Mafia Attorney - A mafia member that can choose one person within the mafia each night. If that person is investigated, the chosen mafia member will appear pro-town to whoever investigated him.

Mafia Cop - See Mafia Stalker.

Mafia Doctor - Can choose one person at night to protect (besides himself). Usually it is a fellow mafia member, and the mafia doctor can protect that person from dying during the night.

Mafia Framer - Can choose one person at night. He plants evidence on that person so that if investigated they will turn up as anti-town. The evidence may last only that night or may last multiple nights. In some variations, if the framed person isn't investigated, the target finds the planted evidence and can expose that there is a framer.

Mafia Hitman - When present, the Hitman is the designated person to perform kills on behalf of the Mafia. If he dies, then someone else from the mafia may have to perform kills, but then may not be able to perform their other night actions, if any. Usually, the Hitman is immune from roleblocker or doctor protections, but typically not both.

Mafia Interceptor - Can choose one person at night. He then intercepts all night action messages sent back to the selected person. The selected person may still receive the message, or the Interceptor may be the only one who receives the message.

Mafia Janitor - Can choose one person at night. If that person dies at the hands of someone other than the Mafia, only the Janitor leans his role, and the town is not told what role he was. In some variations may be able to select people the Mafia are going to kill, but then is limited to one or two cover-ups in the game.

Mafia Kidnapper - Can choose one person at night. That person is kidnapped and removed from the game for a period of time (e.g., 1-2 days). While kidnapped, the person cannot participate in day or night activities.

Mafia Mason - A controversial role (seen as unfair by many) in which the person is a member of the Mafia and of the Masons. The pro-town Masons believe the Mafia Mason is also pro-town.

Mafia Master of Disguise - Chooses one person at night and disguises himself as that person. If seen at night, the selected person is seen rather than the Master of Disguise. In some variations may be able to disguise other members of the mafia while they perform their night actions. Same basic role could be a pro-town role particularly when person has multiple roles.

Mafia Ninja - Cannot be tracked by a tracker or detected by a watcher. As a result, he can visit mafia members, or be visited by mafia members, without giving information away. In some variations, he also can bypass doctors and/or roleblockers.

Mafia Pimp - See Mafia Roleblocker.

Mafia Poisoner - Can choose one person at night. That person is poisoned, but dies the next night. If the person is protected by the doctor on either night, then the poison doesn't take effect. In some variations, the poisoner may poison during the day so that the person dies the next day (also gives the doctor only one shot at protecting the person). In some cases, the poisoned individual may be told he feels ill so that he has a clue that he has been poisoned.

Mafia Prostitute - See Mafia Roleblocker.

Mafia Recruiter - Can choose one person at night to try and recruit into the mafia. Depending on the person, they may or may not be recruited. Some players (e.g., traitor, weak doctor, etc.) may always be recruited. Other players (e.g., cops, doctors, vigilantes, etc.) may never be recruited, and would be killed instead. Other players may have a possibility of being recruited (e.g., 50% chance of recruiting a thief and a 50% chance of killing the thief)

Mafia Roleblocker - Can choose one person each night. That person is then unable to perform his night actions (e.g., can't kill, investigate, protect, etc.)

Mafia Silencer - Can choose one person each night. That person is unable to speak in the game thread the next day. Sometimes the silenced person can't say anything. Other times the silenced person can vote, but otherwise can't say anything. In one variation the Silencer is not in the mafia but is pro-mafia (e.g., a traitor) and knows who the Mafia members are.

Mafia Stalker - Can choose one person at night to investigate. The stalker then determines that person's role.

Mafia Stripper - See Mafia Roleblocker.

Mafia Tailor - Can give one player, excluding himself, a suit at night that represents a role. If the suited player dies within one full day (killed that night or lynched the next day), their role will be listed as the suit given. The Tailor may only be able to give suits corresponding with roles in the game or may have free reign to pick any suit they want.

Mafia Terrorist - A mafia member that can choose to bomb anyone during the day. If used, the bomb will kill the victim and the terrorist.

Mafia Usurper - A regular mafia member, except that his goal is to have the Godfather killed. In some variations, once the Godfather is killed the Usurper takes over as Godfather and is found to be pro-town by investigators.

Saulus - A regular townie that converts to mafia if targeted by the mafia at night. Similar to a Traitor, except that the Saulus is unaware of who the mafia members are.

Saulus II. This type of Saulus is aligned with the mafia. It is this person's job to help lynch the town so that the mafia outnumbers the town or nothing can be done to prevent this. When the Saulus is first lynched or nightkilled, he will be resurrected as town with a new win condition that will be to eliminate all threats to the town's safety. If the Saulus dies a second time after this, the Saulus is dead for good.

Traitor/Spy - Starts as a town member, but knows who the mafia are and secretly tries to help their cause. If targeted by the mafia, he will become a mafia member. If investigated by the town, he will appear pro-town before he is converted, and anti-town after he is converted.

Third Party Roles

Basic Third Party Role

Serial Killer - A Serial Killer can choose one person each night to kill. Typically, the Serial Killer will have a common modus operandi and kill in a similar way each time. Specific types of serial killers are arsonists, bombers, cannibals, drug lords, and psychopaths, but most serial killers kill with a knife. May leave a calling card at each death, but the calling card is usually random (although may be chosen by the serial killer or the moderator).

Other Third Party Roles

Accident Victim - The Accident Victim has been injured in an accident, and can't remember his role or alignment. In general, the Accident Victim will start to regain his memory throughout the game, or may suddenly remember what his role and alignment are.

Cult Leader - A third party role similar to a Mason, that can recruit people into his Cult. The Cult is anti-town, and the goal is to recruit town members and have anyone not a member of the cult be lynched. The Cult Leader can recruit town members, but dies when recruiting Mafia members or Serial Killers. Usually, only the Cult Leader can recruit, although variations may include multiple cult recruiters, in which case the role is usually a Cult Recruiter. The Cult members may also kill Masons that try to recruit them.

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde - Could be one player, or could be two players. When it is one person, this is a type of serial killer, but has alternating Doctor and Serial Killer nights. On night 1, for example, the Dr. Jekyll phase allows the player to protect someone (if desired), and on night 2, the Mr. Hyde phase allows the player to kill someone. If there are two players, one is Dr. Jeykll and the other is Mr. Hyde. The Dr. Jeykll player is a member of the town and Mr. Hyde is a member of the Mafia. They know who each other are and ultimately will betray the town/mafia to be the last two survivors. If one dies, the other dies.

Epidemic - This is a type of Serial Killer. The Epidemic can choose a person each night to infect. The infected will have a 75% chance of dying the following night. Anyone that visits the infected during the night they are infected will have a 50% chance of dying.

Follower/Trigger - The Follower can vote only if the Trigger has first voted. Depending on the variation, if the Trigger dies, the Follower may then be able to vote without waiting, may no longer be able to vote, or may select (or have selected for him) a new Trigger. The Trigger and Follower may or may not know their roles. In some cases, the Follower does not know his follower role, and his vote is simply not counted by the Mod (usually where vote totals are posted without listing voters). The Trigger may be appointed by the Mod or chosen by the Follower.

Gate Keeper- Is not aligned with anyone. The gate keeper basically can choose who lives or dies, and thus is the keeper of the Gate to Heaven and/or Hell. There could be lots of variations particularly because it is a powerful role. In one variation, the Gatekeeper can prevent a killing action from happening (or can make it miss its mark or just injure the person). The Gate Keeper may be limited in the number and/or types of kills he can prevent so that he doesn't keep everyone alive forever. For example, the Gate Keeper may not be able to prevent kills occurring by the voice of the people (i.e., lynches), may only be able to save a person once, may only be able to save 3 people throughout the game, etc.

Ghost - The Ghost only has powers after he dies. After the Ghost has been killed in the game, the Ghost can choose to haunt one player. Anything that the ghost asks the haunted victim must be answered by the victim in the game thread without revealing that the person is being haunted.

Jester - The Jester's goal is to get lynched. The Jester wins by being lynched, but loses if killed in any other way.

Leader - This role generally isn't assigned by the moderator, but is instead given to a person elected by the town and then passed down from leader to successor to successor, etc.. Usually, the person is elected on day 1 (or day 0) instead of there being any lynch vote. The Leader can be anyone in the town (i.e., townie, mafia, SK, cult, etc.) and gets certain abilities by being the leader. This person retains his/her original abilities, but also gets one additional ability at night. In some variations, the leader's additional ability can be selected from a set of available options (but only one per night...for example, one of roleblocking, protecting, or watcher/tracker). The leader's vote usually also counts double on a lynch vote. If the Leader dies, the town may select a new leader (or at times may decide to replace the leader instead of having a lynch vote). Alternatively, the Leader may be responsible for designating a successor and that successor assumes power as the Leader upon the death of his/her predecessor. In the latter case, the town is typically not made aware of who the successor is until the Leader has died.

Lovers - Two players (usually one in the town and the other in the mafia) are linked, so that if one dies, the other commits suicide the next night. Sometimes another role Cupid may select who the lovers are on the first night, so they may both be mafia, may both be town, or there may be one from each faction.

Lyncher/Lynchee - The Lyncher's goal is to have the Lynchee lynched during the game; however, the Lynchee does not know he is the lynchee. If the Lynchee dies in any way other than by public lynching, the Lyncher loses and commits suicide.

Puppet Master/Puppet - Puppet Master controls the puppet, the puppet has no knowledge of his actions. The Puppet Master chooses a target for the puppet to kill. Once the Puppet Master is killed the puppet decides on his own who to kill. Puppet master will show pro-town when investigated by the cop but the puppet will give some sort of clue he is being controlled

Second Mafia - Not so much a role as it is a possibility that the above mafia roles will be split into two or more mafia groups. For instance, there may be one Italian Mafia group and one Russian Mafia group. Different mafia groups act independently and try to kill off the town and the other mafia group.

Serial Killer in Training - The Serial Killer in Training is effectively a townie and it takes one less vote to lynch him. If, however, the Serial Killer in the game is killed, the Serial Killer in Training takes over as the Serial Killer.

Siblings - Siblings usually consist of a pro-town cop and a member of the mafia. They know who each other are, and if one dies then the other commits suicide the following night.

Survivor - The Survivor's only goal is to survive until the end of the game. He may be in the town or mafia, but can only win if he never dies.

Twins - Like siblings, but anything happening to one twin also happens to the other. Both Twins could be pro-town or both anti-town, or there could be one of each. In some cases, the Twins don't know who each other are (adoptive twins) and also receive any information that is sent to the other. (e.g., with a pro-town cop and an anti-town mafia cop, they each get their own results in addition to the results of their twin).

lol, this is a little different from that. this is all done in one thread, unless you are part of the mafia. Kind of like "Clue".
