swithing from Drive to Manual

Okay, here goes. I have and have had cars that have the ability to switch from full auto to manual mode. THE QUESTION I HAVE, is can you switch from Drive to Manual mode ON THE FLY? I have the manual, and have read it cover to cover, especially section 8, pages 26 thru 29 which is all about the auto tranny. BUT it never states that you can switch from one mode to the other ON THE FLY. Does anybody know FOR SURE? one of our TURE GM GUYS??

Yes it can. I test drove one the other day and my dealer specifically told me to do it on the fly so I could see that it can be done.

Switching to M will first put it in the Sport shift mode where it will still shift automatically but with a "sportier" shift algorhythm. Touching a tap shift button on the wheel will give you a gear indication in the center DIC at the lower left. Down shifts will rev match to avoid the car lurching on a down shift. The car will keep you from doing anything that will hurt it.

Switching from Tap Shift back to normal Sport Mode

Ok, here's a question...I know you can shift back and forth from "D" to "M" on-the-fly. But once you've used either tap shifter in "M" mode, the tranny stays that way until you shift to "D" and then back to "M," correct? Or is there another way to get back to regular "M" mode after tap shifting that I'm not aware of?

I've been wondering about this because sometimes I like to shift down for that burst of power...but then I'm done and just want to immediately go back to regular "M" mode. Don't really want to shift to "D" and back to "M." I guess that will become second nature after a short while, though, eh?

Any thoughts out there...?

It will stay in "D" or "M" until you physically shift it from one position or the other. These are physical locations on the console shifter. The shifter will never move on its own. There are however circumstances when in "M" mode when it will auto shift gears for you. I haven't fooled around with that enough to remember specifics but I believe that is kind of a failsafe functionality to keep you from over revving a gear.

If you leave it in M without shifting, it goes into "Sport Mode."

Yes, you can you go into a sports mode and it will give you an extra burst. It is the edge the Auto has, that it can go into a manual mode while on the fly. Really gives a nice performance.

What's good about that you get the manual feel almost identical, but don't have to worry about stalling the computer will just put you back in the last shift. With a manual you will stall and could hurt the car.

I'm definitely going to have to play with this M mode some more. Seems I made a couple bad assumptions about it. How many of you guys just drive it in M mode all the time without tap-shifting?

I apologize for any misleading comments.
