why are the rear rotos bigger than the fronts...

there cant be too many cars like this... if any at all...
i know the rears will be thinner... but wouldnt bigger rear brakes make for more...uhh rear slide i guess...??

my guess is because the rear tire is fatter but it dtill doesnt make sense to me... on my 350 the fronts were 255 and the rear were 285 and the front rotors were still 14 and the rears were like 12.4

Corvette is the same way, however, the rear wheels are an inch larger as well.

Maybe since the tires being an inch bigger calls for an inch bigger rotor?

Or maybe the bigger rotors give more surface area for the pads to press on..

more surface area=more friction
more friction=faster breaking

dude... bigger tires in the rear were on the corvette
not the camaro ...
and friction = heat... more friction more heat the idea is to limit heat while maintaining prolonged useful stopping distance (ie racing)

the camaro has 20's all around

More surface area would also help spread the heat out so it wouldn't be as concentrated in one spot. You asked the question.. I gave my idea.

either way thats not the point... the point is why is there a bigger rotor in the back than the front... on every other car its the other way around

Ok, they are the same diameter but different width's. The fronts are smaller than the backs. This is to give better handing control. Less area touching the ground means less friction to overcome when turning. The opposite is the case for the rear. Wider tire means more friction which means more traction to handle all that power!!

No they're not. The fronts are 14" diameter, the rears are 14.4".

If you look at the rotors themselves, there is less actual swept area on rotor by the caliper. Brake bias is tuned in the hydraulics anyways.

Anyhow, I'm pretty sure the rear rotor is larger to incorporate the parking brake assembly, which I believe on the CTS-V (the Camaro looks to be getting that setup) was inside the rotor hat. I can assure you it has nothing to do with tire width. Don't believe me? Look at the C6Z.

GM needlessly gave themselves more engineering costs for a larger rear brake rotor for looks? I doubt it.

I doubt you are going to tell the .4 difference in the rear. Why did GM do this? Who knows, but I doubt it will affect stopping performance one way or another ..
