Gears

I hope that they offer different rear end gear ratios as an option. Any word on what the standard gear will be? Probably 3.42 in the MT Vettes.

Would like to see 3.73's as an option.

That's a good point. It's amazing the difference that proper gearing can make. I just adore the automatic rear-end gearing that GM always gives (sarcasm).

I hear ya on that. 2.72s in the AT Vette are worthless...get pulled out the hole by a Yugo.

The 4th gen V8 cars had 3.42s in the six speeds and 2.73s in the automatics. However, the automatic also had the GU5 axle option which gave you z-rated tires, removed the speed limiter, and a 3.23 to 1 axle ratio. I have it on my car and it isn't bad at all. Being primarily street driven I wouldn't go lower than 3.42 if I were to change them out. It would be nice to see a couple of choices though, especially with the rumor of the 6L80E being the automatic to go in the car. The older 3rd gens were pretty long winded. My '89 RS had a 350 turbo in it and had absolutely no low end due to only having three gears.

My '89 IROC has a 700R4 but it's mated to gears that are just an abomination. Something in the neighborhood of 1, I'm sure...lol.

Yeah my transmission was swapped before I bought the car. It also had a 350 out of a truck. It still had the stock throttle body injection. I was 18 then and had no idea about anything other than engine sizes and how many gears a few of the GM transmissions had. Now that I look back I never should have traded that car in. It needed simple things to fix to make it just a nice, clean ride. The body on it was flawless and it was a non T-top car. Other than performance parts, It probably needed about $1000 worth of parts that I could have installed myself to be cherry. Oh well live and learn I guess.

There really isn't anything "wrong" with the 6L80/90...I don't think so at least.

That is a good question.

I would like to see a 3.73 gear option as well, but I wonder if GM will offer such a steep ratio for an IRS setup?

I'm sure the IRS will be able to handle a 3.73 ratio, but automakers do have some pretty stringent design factors they have to deal and comply with as well as fuel efficiency.

Yeah I'm kind of expecting 2.73 or 3.23. Especially with the six speed auto it should be fine unless you are a hardcore racer.

I had a 2002 Z06 LPE TT that put 600+hp to the wheels w/ 3.73. I had no problems with my IRS. Never really dogged too hard out the hole...1.6 to 1.7 60ft times. Would post a video but don't know how :(

First time to the 1/4 mile track with TT Vette and 3.73 gears. They worked prefect with the MN12 as you cross the finish line near the top of 4th gear.
