Anyone miss Monster Garage, Junkyard Wars and other similar shows?

I was just thinking about all the garbage that passes as reality TV these days, and those shows were no more faked than most of the 'reality TV' on now. Sure, Junkyard Wars seeded the place with key pieces of equipment, but 4 people built functional machines in ~10 hours out of cobbled together scrap. And Monster Garage was pretty neat too. A lot of that stuff was either you get it or you don't. If I have to explain why a hacked up semi, re-built into a trike is cool ... well, you won't understand the answer anyway.

Somewhat related were the robot fighting shows from the same era. Battle Bots and the UK based Robot Wars were the two big ones. I still remember Razer from the UK, it either dominated or suffered a breakdown. I don't think anyone actually out-fought it, they either lost or were lucky.

I've seen a few similar shows lately, but they don't compare to the classics from 5-10 years ago.

Monster Garage ... HELL NO!
When I owned my wrecking yard, I did a segment with them (my yard was only a few miles away from West Coast Choppers). They came down, spent a few hours, had us hooked up with microphones, stuck cameras in our faces and talked to us ... it all seemed pretty cool. When they told me the episode was going to air, I told all my family and friends (stretching from CA to NY) to watch ... including a small group at my house. Well, I guess I ended up on the editing room floor ... they cut everything except for 2 shots of car stacked in the yard. How embarassing. I was so pissed the next day they wouldn't even take my calls ...
My buddy is a cop and he was on one of the teams (cop car do-nut machine) and I guess they treated them a little better than most ...
I've done a few more shows and such at my yard, and most of the time they are more of a hassle than they are worth ...

I watched Junkyard wars, but I could never get into it. It was SO RIGGED! It's like, "okay teams, your challenge is to dig a hole", and suddenly both teams find tractors in the junkyard. C'mon now.

If you liked Monster Garage, be sure to check out Ultimate Car Buildoff on Discovery--it's rad. Plus one of the hosts is Lou Santiago from the Powerblock.

I got over that part pretty quickly, namely after they admitted that they seeded the yard with specialty parts and continually added cars, wheels, and stock steel. But they never really pretended it was supposed to be an accurate depiction of a junkyard. Afterall, finding a propeller in the back of a van is probably more common than having 2 side by side outdoor shops in a junkyard.

I've seen one and a half episodes of Ultimate Car Buildoff, cable screwed up partway through the 2nd episode. Seems to be in the same spirit. I hated Lou on Musclecar, seems to have mellowed for this show though.

Junkyard wars was awesome.... I dont care if it was seeded or not.. it amazed me to see some of the crazy things that could be built.

Monster Garage... who cares if he is an asshole or now.. that was crazy. some of the things that did were just as stupid as "Pimp My Ride" but others were cool as can be.

i miss both shows
