Exclamation And so it begins...

Hey all, I finally decided to sell my first car. I am planning on buying a Red 98 - 02 Camaro with the RS package. V6 of course for a lower insurance, plus it will get me accustomed to rwd and the 3.8 has good modding potential. If any of you know any one selling, or can offer any advice I'd appreciate it. Should be ready to buy around January - Febuary.

I've been lurking on the forums for about a year. I want to give it a few mods so it can pack a little punch when needed. I want to keep it N/A though. Probably going to do some cosmetics on the interior and exterior over the next couple of years. I know the 3.8 tends to last quite some time. (I've heard milage around 250,000 - 300,000 if kept in good condition.) Eventually I'd like to swap it for an LS1, put more performance into it, and keep it as a toy then get another DD. I know the swap is a hassle and expensive but I plan on this being a long term goal. Plus I am a sucker for that RS trim for some reason

Thanks for reading. I love this forum and hope to be posting pics up within the next couple of months!

I ASSUME youre getting an automatic???....if you are you better have a good amount of $$$$$$$$$ set aside for swapping those motors,,,,oh and the tranny....just get a 6-speed my friend...things will be somewhat easier.

I'll start off by saying welcome.

now.... like devildog said, it will cost a Lot to swap to an LS1 in a v-6 car. transmission, suspension, motor, wiring harness, computer, gauges, EVERYTHING has to be swapped out.

your better off just buying an LS1 now or trading the car towards an LS1 f-body in the future (or keep the v-6 in good shape, and save for a 2010 camaro)

now you said you wanna get some power out of it... well being a 3.8, I would say swap hoods and throw a s/c on it, but you want to stay N/A. which is fine, but dont expect a huge amount of power out of it N/A regardless of the mods you do.

what you can do is swap out the intake/filter and exhaust to free up the airflow.
seafoam the motor and do a good tune up all around and keep it in good condition.

the 3.8 is a reliable little powerhouse. but its a little powerhouse. and as i said before, it would be cheaper and easier to just swap the whole car for a V8 down the road than to try and swap a v8 into your v6.

you said you'd be ready to buy in Jan-Feb.... why not look at the new V-6 camaro? then you would have the power and reliablilty.

thanks.

ive seen too many people try to do a v-8 swap and get half way there, then realize they have to swap this... and that... oh, and that over there, aww crap, this doesnt fit... dang it!!!

now.... if you were to have a v-8 motor and trans/kmember ready to rock, that would be another story, but you can find LS1 camaros for cheap these days, esp with the 2010 coming out right around the corner

Question

Found a nice V6 Camaro at a dealer about half an hour from me, going to check it out tomorrow afternoon. It's the exact one I want exept for the lack of T-tops.
Besides looking cool, interacting with the sun, and blasting my 80's music is there any real disadvantages to not having T-tops? Are the 4th gens notorious for any leakage? Are they really worth having? I really wanted T-tops but if I can talk the dealer's price down I don't know if I can pass this up. Thanks in advance.

I've heard the T tops do leak if there used often but I would rather have them than a normal roof or convertable

ya t-tops leak mine leak...the drivers side next to the window is the worst area...but then again thats why i bought it...cheap cause the guy who owned it didnt want to fix the problem and the lil bit of water damage on the headliner gave me enough reason to switch to black interior instead of the gray
