Hello, a car lift is a great idea, however you may be restricted by the opening of your garage door(s).

My idea was to increase my ability to park an additonal car in the garage. Was seriously considering a lift until I realised that when the car was on the lift the garage door would not be able to open.

Thanks,

Kelly

I have a 4 post lift. I'll take some pic's and get some measurement's when I get home tonight. I'll include photos of my modified garage door track.

My house is on the corner of a mini strip mall. So to get into my garage I have to go through the strip mall parking lot.

I have 2 power line poles that feed power to the mall stores. 1 right out side my garage and one in my yard on the opposite end of my garage. I have to raise the roof up abit to get one in. Raising the roof will hit the wires they claim. Strike 1

Now the side of my garage if next to a 50-60 car parking lot for a bar. Their is about 10 feet of yard between my garage and the lot. They claim unless a steel guard rail is put in the parking lot between my yard and the lot. I cant put the lift in my garage. They state they dont want some freak driving into my garage while im working on a car. Strike 2

City wont pay for the guard rail even though me and my other 6 neighbors filed a petition to have it done. strike 3

I will admit I have had 3 cars so far crash through my fense coming 2 feet from wrecking my garage.

I file my motion every year to have it done. They are annoyed by me at town meetings when I file for it.

Harbor frieght. $1000

As light as the Camaro is, this one is fine. But a bit better one is $1400. Some of the local stores will order it for you, and save shipping.

We used our old one alot.

If you need to get to the under carriage, use jackstand AFTER you lift it, lower it, and pull the lift out.

The only time we needed to do this was for an exhaust swap, once.

Mostly used it for cleaning, oil changes, tire swaps, inspecting etc.

With ground effects, you may need to buy some 10'x2"x10" to drive up on to clear the lift.

Wow, that would be perfect for the one car garage at my apartment.

Just built a 1000 sq ft, 3 car garage. I had planned to put a lift in, but went $10k over budget. Lift will have to wait till next year. Anyways, this lift is what I intend to buy. It's a 2 post and can be moved or put away.

http://www.maxjaxusa.com/

You can get it for around $2k. I'm going to put floor anchors in all 3 bays.

I've got the 10,000 lb arch lift like what's on this site. You need a 12 foot ceiling for clearence but I can have the car in the air over my head in 3 minutes. I use it all the time even though I don't do the majority of my work. I've got $2,700 in mine counting tax and installation. Worth every penny. Good luck.

Thanks colemanvoice!

We will now resume the "lift" thread.

I have a 10 foot ceiling. I am 5'9" tall and can just get the car high enough to stand straight under the car. If the car or I were taller I would not be able to stand. The lift itselt can go up another 9 inches.

As for the door clearance, I was able to get it to work. Other than making sure it would clear the car, the door handle needs to clear the door frame and spring bracket. I was able to do that the second time. I didn't need to by any additional track. I cut it at the bend, where I thought it would work, and cut a straight piece off of the other end. A few carrage bolts and some angles and it works just fine.

And one more thing, with a four post lift, if you use it to store two cars in one bay you can add drip pans to catch any drips from the upper car. Just remember to put them back if you move them. Fortunately the trans fluid dris were small enough and I caught them in time that they didn't destroy the paint on my hood! I won't make that mistake again.
