tire pressure question

sorry if this is already posted somewhere but i searched

im just wondering if its normal for my tires to be loosing pressure already

i have not had the car 3 months yet and i believe they were around 37 when i got it

the tires now are all at 33 34 32 and one even went to 31 tonight and the low tire warning came on

is this normal? and my tires are filled with nitrogen from the dealer

are you checking it with an air pressure gauge or are you looking at your DIC?

try checking with an actual air gauge and go from there. but no its not normal to lose air and have low air warning light come on. use a gauge to single out if you are actually losing air pressure.

...Did you have them purge and fill with nitrogen? factory air fill in the tires isn't nitrogen as far as I know. You should always check your pressure once a month, regardless what the car says. PSI will always change even with nitrogen. A good normal or digital gauge (one that can read 1/2 psi increments or even 10ths) can give you a more consistant reading than the tpms. That would be the closest to coming to the relearn tool the dealer uses. It reads in 10ths. The car computer just rounds it to the nearest. And try to fill them cold (door sticker states cold psi) for best results.

The weather is cooling off. The numbers you are reporting are reasonable for the temp drop I think.

However, the low pressure light should not be coming on if they're all above 30. I'd have it checked out by the dealer.

ok well i just went out to check them with a normal tire pressure guage...its not digital or anything but it was showing them at 35-36 so that means the car is telling me wrong...why would this be and can it be fixed....thats pretty sad if the car has a feature that dont work, if it can be fixed ill take it to the dealer tomorrow, i dont want that low tire warning on all the time

Basic rule of thumb for AIR is 1 psi per month and 1 psi per ten degree temp change. Three months should equal about 3 psi if temp is steady, so that would be 34. If temp is 10 deg lower, then 33. Per rule of thumb. So it sounds normal for an AIR fill.

However, you mention a Nitrogen fill. Nitrogen should hold longer and be less influenced by temp changes. I would say the drops you are experiencing are not normal for a proper Nitrogen fill. A proper fill must evacuate moisture prior to or during the fill. Nitrogen with moisture defeats the benefit of Nitrogen.

If you check the DIC throughout the day you'll see that the air in the tires fluctuate... On a typical morning my DIC will show the air in the tires to be anywhere from 31 to 33, but after driving my morning commute it will have increased a couple of pounds per tire.... that has been my experience...

BINGO
pretty much common to lose a pound a month. it is good to check tire psi once a month

Mine typically lose 1 - 2 pounds per month. If you have a spare tire, you might want to check it. We had a 4 x 4 Tacoma that said it had a low tire. Drove me crazy until I found out the spare was the culprit.

Mine go down to 30 if it was cold at night already here in NY and its not even fall yet. Didnt have any warnings either. Once I drive around they heat up by 2-3 PSI depending on weather. Unless they fall below 30 I wouldn't worry. Unless its a really hot day out, then they should be higher.

How do you know the gauge is correct? Recommend you use a calibrated digital gauge that you know is correct.

I thought the green caps on the valve stems meant the tires were filled with Nitrogen. Am I wrong in my assumption?

your car is still under warranty. since your problem is not a nail in the tire i would press "reset" to relearn the tire pressure. On your DIC press reset and see what happens. if it does not fix it take to service dealer.

I would NOT press reset unless you are willing to do the air release/relearn process. Several of us have had issues with that system not relearning properly.

It also has a lot to do with current weather conditions. Mainly Barometric pressure ( barometer is up tire is low and so on). but the should all be 1 lb close to each other.

thanks guys but i played it safe this morning and just went to the dealer to let them handle it, he said he put air in and reset the tire pressure system, it showed 35 on all 4 when he gave it back to me, but now my tire guage is reading them at about 40 at home, im gonna have to get a new guage and make sure

Mine is just like that too. When the temps get colder, you will notice the alert coming on more often (that's what mine did last winter). I noticed yesterday, when the temps had cooled down considerable over night that my DIC had the pressure down in one tire enough to make the alert come on. Filled it with air, and it's good to go.

You had a dealer put air in your tires?

Turn in your man card.

Nitrogen doesn't mean squat. When your tires are low, you bust out the compressor and gas em up.

Tire pressure will drop with temp and time, it's a physics thing. I laugh my ass off everytime I see a low tire with a green cap. I told a lady once in a parking lot she had a low tire, thinking I was doing her a favor. I even carry a 12v compressor in my trunk and offered to air it up for her. Her comment, no it isn't low - I have nitrogen in my tires. Ok, have a nice day.

Really need to pay attention heading into Fall/Winter.

In Spring/Summer the temp rise compensates for the monthly loss. You might lose 4 psi over four months due to air escape, but gain 4 psi as the avg temp rises 40 degrees. I make it through spring/summer with barely a bother to put air in tires.

In Fall/Winter, the monthly loss and temp loss compounds against you. Not only do you lose the 4 psi due to air escape, but you lose another 4 psi as the avg temp drops 40 degrees. That's an 8 psi loss over a few months! In Fall/Winter, I'm typically putting air in once a month...and sometimes a few psi above spec knowing the temp is headed down.

Lastly, it's a good idea to get in the habit of performing a psi DIC check on a regular basis; if you work daily, do it each morning before heading out to work and before heading home at end of day. Not only will this give you a good feel for how the psi is changing day to day, it can also give you a good warning if a tire has a leak.
