Vararam and Surging
Has anyone been able to tune out or some how else fix the surging with the Vararam CAIs?
I threw my stock CAI on, no surging, threw my buddys K&N on, no surging - but every time with the vararam I can get some huge surging when just going into drive after starting up, after doing a burn out, after a heavy acceleration, while coming to stop signs, and bucking type surging while on the highway at 60-70 mph in 6th gear (A6). I believe I recall several months ago people talking about the surging issue, has a resolution ever been found?

Call Varraam. They have a small plate that you attach to your filter that fixes the surging issues. Mossman said zero issues with it and he has a cammed camaro. I ordered mine today and was told it should be free.

Wow its only been a year and a half and people are still waiting for this intake / revision. All I can say is thankfully I never bought their hype of 30+ HP. Considering this motor has practically been out for 15 years and I dont think Ive ever seen a cai produce 30+ hp, I dont see how people were biting on that. Maybe if you use the Tornado and an electric supercharger in front of it you will see 30hp, but not off a CAI alone. G8 people have had hit or miss luck with this unit too.....its time to just get something thats proven already.

Well, I have the Vararam and had the bucking and surging pretty bad. Finally got the "fix" installed and it pretty much fixed it, except my MPG went down 3-4 MPG after that. I ran it that way for about 200 miles, but wasn't getting much better. Went back to my tuner (RPM in Garner NC) today and it's now running great. It really is running great and very smooth now.
For what it's worth, my tuner said they have installed many brands of CAI in the new Camaros and they seem to get most HP out of the Airaid and the K&N.

Does this "fix" part for the filter have a negative effect on airflow?
I have surging in hot and humid weather. I want to get the "fix" but I don't want to add anything that might affect performance (negatively). I don't like the surging, but I'll live with it if it makes more HP that way. |

I suggest calling Vararam and talking to them. The part that is the "fix" helps to direct and even the air flow across the MAF. I don't think it's that restrictive, but I'm sure it is a little. I did not notice any effect on HP loss after the "fix", I did not get it back on the dyno though. I can say it's running the best ever now since the "fix" (and re-tuned after data-logging) with no surging or bucking at all.

I have surge issues with my original Vararam and I've been back and forth with them. I was informed that all new street and tune versions would be available sometime this month. So I'm waiting for one to swap in. I'll let you know when I hear more.
