Oh yes... That was the very first thing they did for me. And a smoke test too.

I wonder if there is a program update to eliminate false code settings?

OK, here's my final answer

Yes the computer was upgraded and the gas cap replaced at the first visit. during that visit they also did a smoke test and found a disconnected vacuum hose on the evap. canister. Those things were all done and I was sent on my way. The next morning, same message, same code.

Back to the dealer it went this week. They spent 2 days on it. I assume with GM Tech Support assistance this time. Here's what they found and I quote from the service invoice:
A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND TIGHTEN GAS CAP MESSAGE COMES ON, CAUSE: E

712 P0455, PERFORMED EVAP SYSTEM TEST TO LOCATE LEAK IN PURGE VALVES, REPLACED VALVE, RETESTED AND PASSED.
So that's where things are this afternoon. So far so good. We may have it fixed. I'll give it another day or two before I declare complete victory.

Here's my latest:
Last Friday (10/1) I believe it was, I went back to the dealer because low and behold it came back. They cleared the code and tested it for 3 hours... it was giving P0455 large evap leak as well. They replaced a solenoid the previous visit... it was either a solenoid or purge valve something of the sort, can't remember and the paperwork is .. around here somewhere.

They never mentioned directly the evap hose, but did say that everything was connected and sealed, and no leaks large or small were found.

So entire week goes by almost, Friday i get the "tighten gas cap" message again while driving out to lunch. I call them up, they want me to bring it back.

So here's the interesting turn of events... I haven't had the chance to go back, and may not till next week, but the check engine light that came on soon thereafter... decided to turn off today, on its own.

What the hell!!!

I may have found a way to "force" the issue so to speak. Seems that for me it only comes on when the vehicle is running its self test. The service manager advised me that it only runs this self test if the vehicle is going below 3 mph or idling. Im not sure if 3mph is the exact cutoff, maybe he meant 30.. but I idled for about 10 minutes while I ate my lunch in the car, then went for a drive through a 25-mph neighborhood on Friday when it came back on.

The rest of the week I'd been driving at normal speeds (35-45mph) and no warnings.

Here's to hoping we can make sense of this

Speed is not one of the criteria for running the P0455 large leak self test.

The service manual lists the criteria for running the self test, which can also be manually triggered using a scan tool.

The self test is run once every cold start, and there is a number of criteria such as fuel level between 10-90%, temp and baro criteria.... a bunch more, but speed is not one of them.

The service manual has a step by step diagnostic to determine what caused the self test to fail. With the test equipment hooked up, you trigger the self test with the scan tool, and the results should be obvious.
If they have all the special tools ( the service manual lists 7 required ) I don't see why this can't be easily diagnosed.

Either they are not using all the special tools as required, or not following the service manual.

The problem has been found and corrected. They found a bad purge valve on the evap. canister and replaced it. It's been about 5 days now with no problems. I'm declaring victory.

I just took my 2011 LS into the dealer for the exact same code (P0455). They ran a smoke test and couldnt detect any leaks. They also said the gas cap was not defective and they cleared the code. We'll see how long it lasts. My car is only 2.5 weeks old.

From what I have been able to figure out I don't think that a smoke test will find anything. My problem seems have been that the purge valve would not close and seal completely to make a vacuum in the system. Replacing that valve seems have corrected the issue. There may have been a bad bunch of those valves come from the supplier.

Note the cap says click only once,
If you click it twice, your car may be ruined forever!

MAYBE NOT!
I could have been wrong back on Oct 14 when I declared victory over this issue. After the better part of a month with no probem the damn thing is doing it again this morning.
Back to the dealer we go again. And to think I sold a perfectly good 50 year old car that NEVER gave me any problems at all for this.

STILL NOT FIXED!

Here's the history and what the dealer has done:
  1. Sept 25 '10 - 80 miles - REPLACED GAS CAP RESET COMPUTER REPAIRED CONNECTION AT EVAP LINE AT CONTRO VALVE.
  2. Oct 6 '10 - 712 miles - P0455, PERFORMED EVAP SYSTEM TEST TO LOCATE LEAK IN PURGE VALVE, REPLACED VALVE, RETESTED AND PASSED
  3. Nov 8 '10 - DIAGNOSE STICKING PURGE SELENOID REPLACED SENOID AND LINES RETESTED PASSED EVAP TEST
  4. November 19 '10, "TIGHTEN GAS CAP" message comes back, P0455 code returned and the check engine light is on again. The dealer has been called but they have not returned my call.

Should I escalate this to the Chevrolet customer service folks or give the dealership one more crack at this? I'm really sick and tired of this %^@# and want it fixed. I've bought a code scanner and could just reset it everytime it happens, but that's not the point. I WANT IT FIXED DAMN IT!

What do you guys think?
