Thud Noise

Hi everyone!

So I've searched this whole forum for an answer to this mysterious thud noise that happens in the rear of the car (maybe trunk?) at times. It's usually when I come to a stop or if my shifts aren't smooth and causes my car to buck. The thud sound can be best described as a basketball hitting the back of my car. I've read on this forum that this could be normal, but I haven't found an answer that everyone seem to agree with.

Does anyone know where this noise is coming from and if I should be worried about it? It's driving me crazy . Thanks in advance everyone!

I notice a "thud" after I fill the tank-doesn't sound like a basketball hitting it though...

Have you had the dealer check it out?

The only things I can think of would be to look under your trunk mat in the wheel well and see if anything is rolling around in there. Also, have the dealer check to make sure everything is tightened properly under the car like the exhaust clamps, sway bar bolts, etc.

If you figure it out, let us know. Good luck!

Oh Larry, I'll do some checking on this end and see if anybody here
has heard anything like that. Does it do it all the time? or just occasionally? Someone here will know

Heh, thanks Becky! It happens once in a while I wouldn't say everytime. The thud usually happens when I brake. It does it most of the time when I'm reversing and hit the brakes to come to a stop.

I get it too, usually when I make a not so perfect shift from 1-2, it's definitely transmission related is all I would say...

1160miles / 2011 Camaro LS

I have same thumping noise issue when I brake. Normally happens when just stopped as recoil or something. Sometimes I hear it, sometimes I don't.

I went to my dealer for the rear thumping noise last friday.

They said, they need to contact GM about it and will get back to me within this week.
But, i doubt it. :(

It sounds like as if the fuel hits fuel tank wall back and forth when I brake to stop.

Hopefully that is what it is.

I found the car manual to be a thud noise in the glove box when I turned

When i first heard this i thought i had a hanging tail pipe, but now I'm leaning toward fuel hitting the tank wall also.

I have noticed that sound 3 or 4 times in the last week, its sounds like someone stomping in the trunk. Usually after a turn it off. I have 20k miles.

Uh, im pretty sure thats the engine downshifting... it happens to my car only when im driving in Manual tapshift mode in my Automatic.

When im in gear 2, and i hit the brakes, it shifts to gear 1 automatically, and the gear change is as described like you guys, harsh. If this is the same case, then you have nothing to worry about. it's normal =)
