Any Truth to the Rumor that Installing an After Market Exhaust Will Void Warranty?

I was talking to some friends and they were saying a rumor had surfaced that adding an after market exhaust would void the manufacturers warranty on the 2010 Camaro. True? False?

In most cases, just a cat-back will not void your warranty. Long tube headers, which in most cases require a tune, probably will. Every dealership can be a little different....talk to your servicing dealership to make sure.

I was told a cat-back system will be fine.

Dealer would have to prove that whatever the issue was, it was caused by you installing the exhaust. Axel back and cat back systems are really a non-issue. If you replaced eveything from the headers back including the cats you could have a potential issue but not likely.

They would just not warranty the exhaust or whatever you happened to replace.

No if you put a turbo on and then your engine blew you would likely be SOL.

Google the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. It provides us consumers with some level of protection.

So no they can not just void the warranty on the entire vehicle but they can exclude any parts that you have added or replaced with aftermarket parts and any damage that may have been caused by an aftermarket part.

They can't void the warranty on the transmission, suspension, interior, etc because you installed an exhaust unless they can prove that the exhaust caused the damage or problem.

It will only void the exhaust warranty and that's IF they can prove your mod exhaust is what caused the problem.

If you have a failure that relates directly back to an aftermarket part then the failure would not be covered. So if you did put a cat-back exhaust on and you had say a window problem, the problem would be covered by warranty. Now if you had a rattle in the rear end that was caused by the a/m mufflers it would not be covered by warranty.

warranty

Dealers don't really have to "prove" anything to initially deny your claim. If they do deny a claim it's up to you to spend $$$ to hire a lawyer and make them prove a relationship between your axle backs and your damage in a courtroom. Anybody tried that?

If they try to deny your claim you don't have to run out and get a lawyer. There is a 1-800 number for GM you can contact IF it comes to that.

I've had the SLP loudmouth on mine since last Sept. I also have an aftermarket CAI. In March of this year I had the entire engine replaced under warranty.

Several years back had a silverado pickup that I had installed a cat back exhaust on. Maybe a month or so passed and I got a CEL, I took it to the dealer for them to see what was up and to fix it.

To make a long story even longer..the service manager "claimed" that he couldn't do any diagnostics because he thought that it might be directly related to my cat back exhaust. I was like...are you kidding me? He said that the exhaust could have decreased the back pressure and caused the computer to throw a code....I was like WTF are you serious? This guy would not even hook it up to see what code was thrown unless I put the original exhaust system system back on it. Needless to say...after taking this up the chain of command...they finally agreed to hook it up and diagnose the problem which by the way...had absolutely nothing to do with my cat back exhaust.

The point is...some dealers out there can be real pricks...it all depends on where you go I guess.

many dealerships will find whatever reason they can to not do warranty work.

technically they would have to prove the exhaust caused the damage/problem. but that would be in court, after they denied you warranty work and you hired an attorney to fight it.

It truely depends on your dealer. I would ask them first and see what they say.

OK. After the person on the other end of the 800 number denies your claim, then your have to run out and get a lawyer.

Don't get me wrong. It's pretty unlikely that an axle back is going to cause you grief, but in a worse case scenario you could find yourself in court.

It's good to hear that GM stepped up for you. Did you have a tune? What was wrong with your engine?

Just took mine in last week and dealer noted on invoice I had aftermarket exhaust, aftermarket intake and air filter. Also stated they noted it in the system. I am awaiting call back from the service manager as to why this was even noted. It was taken in for something other than engine related.

A dealer did the same thing to me with my pickup truck when I took it in for a clutch problem. First they tried to blame my aftermarket sub-woofers and wiring.. Then after I proved that could not be the case, they made a similar note for me.

I just picked up my car last night and asked the dealer about CAI and cat back. The dumb ass told me a CAI WOULD void the warranty and cat back probably would but I would need to speak with them first. Then he tried to sell me GM's high performance Corsa exhaust.

I can not even imagine how cooler air into the engine could cause any kind of problem whatsoever.

I'm going to check with the dealer in the next town to see what they say.

*EDIT
BTW I ordered my Borla cat back this morning

When it comes to the warranty on your vehicle it doesn't matter whether it's modified or 100% stock.....if your dealer sucks.....your warranty sucks!

If you want the most from your warranty, shop for an honest, caring dealership that has a knowledgeable staff, not just the techs but, the management and parts guys as well.

The more knowledgeable they are about the vehicles they sell and service the less likely they are to blame faults on parts that have nothing to do with actual issues.

A catback or axleback exhaust is about the safest thing you can install (warranty wise). Very few dealers would say anything about it. But it wouldn't hurt to ask a service manager at your d'ship

GM can and will get away with whatever they think they can. Even when a TV station here ran a segment on a guy who's Chevy simply would not run in a driveable manner. GMsaid: we have done all we are going to. it is not running right, but we are doing no more. Guy was SOL and GM did not care about the publicity.
