Any news on the airbags yet?

Just wondering if anybody has heard anything about the airbags in these yet. Is it going to have the side curtain crap and all that other "extra protection"? I personally could live without them, been hurt more by them than they have helped. I dont want to make this an "airbags are great" thread, just want to know the plans if they have been released or if anybody that knows can say what the plan is. I know by government regulations it has to have them, but are side bags required or extra safety measures. Just dont like having too much extra crap to worry about going wrong or not working right or having to replace in the event of a light wreck. Like the dashes in the 4th gens.... My dash looks worse than the front of the car after the previous owner hit a parking lot pole. Took me probably 20 minutes to straighten out the front end without having to replace anything. but my point is, the air bags need to be designed to not tear everything to total crap and Id personally only like to see 2. Doesnt make a lot of sense to have to spend more to replace the dash and bags and glass, whatever else it tears up if somebody bumps you or you hit somebody without doin much damage. Id hate to have to replace side windows, headliners, and seats and whatever else they put close to the side bags.

was looking on chevys website to see how they were doing their packages on new models, havnt looked in a while because they havnt really had anything other than the vette that I liked anymore, I see at least on the Monte, they have two air bag options available, anybody think that may be how they do the Maro?

Supposedly the gas cap on the vert is going to be close to production as are most of the features on the vert as far as I know. as for side impact airbags My head has broken enough side windows in buddies cars in wrecks I like the idea. The bag may hit you however it gives you one hellova headace to smash out the side window.

This may seem like a stupid question, but can they even put side curtain air bags on the convertible? I really like the SAAB head protection that pops up for rear seat passengers. The whole reason I really want a new Camaro is because I've got kiddo's.

Gm and Im sure others has been known to put side air bags in the sides of the seats, Buick Rondevous for example, so yes technically a vert could have them. As far as windows being taken out by heads, yes I live with the results of that every day..... and I still dont like airbags. Im not sayin "dont put any air bags at all", and of course I'll have to live with whatever ends up in there I just want to know. As long as they stick to "90% of what you see will reach production, then I already have one in my garage, ya know? but still... a light bump in the front, not only do you have to fix the exterior damage, but you have a dash, steering wheel, and possibly seats, windsheild and side glass....etc.... just think if their gonna put it in, needs to be more complex sensors..... i think i'll stop here i could go on for hours. ---end airbag rant---
cant wait to see what we find out tho

The left side of my face is a "mod" from a drivers door window blowing through the cabin, with the front windshield coming right behind it making like a cheese grater. I still remember the train of thought "OH SH%&*#$, I can fly!, bump, ouch, bang, OUCH!, BOOM, F&%$@# that hurt!" Safety gear is never to be scrimped on.

Then again I saw a HUMMER2 in the Rockies that dropped of a rock shelf and all the air bags went off. There wasn't any other damage and the shelf was only like 18 inches. They were stuck because the truck I guess has a engine shut off/fuel pump shut off when the air bags deploy.

I would guess theres an incredibly strong chance it will get side impact bags and or curtain bag. the 2008 COBALT now has these bags as STANDARD. Highly doubt youll see a Camaro or any new car from GM from now on without them.

It has nothing to do with how well the car is made, its simply a safety issue, side impact airbags reduce injuries, period. they dont compensate for poorly engineered cars. Even back when cars were heavy and solid they had airbags(70's land yacht Caddies)

So has anybody heard anything on it yet or is all Im going to get, exactly what I said I DIDNT want the thread to be about in the first post. I didnt start this thread to argue the safety factor of them, I was just wanting to know if anybody knew and or could give some information on them for this car.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything definitive yet.

I saw Scott at Carlisle, but he was very busy, and unfortunately, I didn't get to ask him. I asked another friend who is quite involved with the concept, and he has no news either.

If I had to guess, I'd think the coupe might have airbags in the wheel and passenger-side dash, as well as side curtain airbags. The 'vert would have the same, with the difference being instead of side airbags, they would be similar to those on other 'verts, with the bags in the sides of the seats.

Thanks Dragon!!

As I said previously I highly doubt we'll see a new Camaro with only passenger and driver airbags. I cant say whether it will have side impact or side curtain or both, but to be sure you'll have at least one of them on any level of vehicle that an enthusiast would want( it may not have them on the very base cars)

GM is very safety conscious and making a concerted effort to improve their image as a safety minded company, they began using tire inflation monitors ong before they were required(federally required phase in on all passenger vehicles starts in 2008) Onstar is going to be standard in all non commercial vehicles by 2010, vehicle stability control will also be standard on all retail vehicles by 2010.

These are things we are just going to have learn to deal with, and that includes the added weight, complexity, and potential dilution of the driving experience.(IMO)
