Foam seal on air intake

Can anyone explain the foam seal on the air intake on the LS3? It does not seal against anything.

I noticed that too, and it doesn't appear to get air from the front of the car/grill?

Air is routed through the front grill; there's a sheet metal panel that directs air hidden under the front facia

I'm guessing engineer A wasn't communicating to engineer B.

Most vehicles that seal, seals off underhood heat from the intake. I have an 09 Silverado where the intake tube goes into the inner fender behind the headlight. It has the exact same style of seal around the tube and it firmly presses up against the sheetmetal - factory CAI.

Someone mucked up.

This is an unrelated thread but the 2nd picture with the exposed radiator shows the plastic mate to the foam tube on the intake side. The black plastic tube like thingee next to the drivers side headlight is it. The top is a open tube ,which draws the air in.

I was wondering the same thing. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I've only had my car for a couple of weeks.

My guess is the gap is caused by over enthusiastic production tolerances. It's cheaper to design the snorkel too short for the production process than to have to cut it shorter on the assembly line. Most of us would say "Measure twice--cut once" GM apparently said "Measure once--it's cheaper"
