de-tune the V8 or better fuel economy?

Wanted to get an A6 V8 for DD but the problem is that for the next 5 months or so, I will have to drive about 100miles on a daily basis, this situation will change after that. So I was wondering if I get a SS now, can I de-tune it for better fuel economy for now and change it back later?

I know this may sounds stupid but doesn't hurt to ask I guess

Hypertech has a 87 octane tune that is (performance wise) very close to the OEM 91 octane. Not sure of the MPG implications though.

the mileage in the a6 is not that much off of the v6 version. figure 4 gallons of gas a day or filling up once a week or so. detuning for more mpg will not be that cost effective. just buy it and enjoy it imo - vary your speeds throughout your commute as you break in the engine if you are buying new.

My daily commute is 24 miles one-way. About 19 of those are rush hour freeway. I average around 23-25 mpg with my M6 SS. If I play stop-light bandit too much my mileage suffers, but why would I want to de-tune to get what--maybe 1 more mpg? I think it's great a 426 h.p. (maybe 440 with the Airaid) engine can get that kind of mileage. I've seen as high as 28 mpg on longer trips, why would I want to mess with that? BTW, that commute mileage is an improvement since adding the Airaid and Pedders Xa's (lowered about 1 1/2 inches) Don't know if the 2 mods increased the mileage, but it's held through 3 tanks so far.

No such thing as "de-tuning" for better MPG. In fact, more HP in the same displacement meaning more efficiency will equal better MPG over stock.

You will regret not buying the SS and in the long run will be trading in the V-6 resulting in a loss.

Get the SS, install a CAI, free flowing exhaust and a tune and you will come out ahead.

I saw 25MPG on the HWY with my M6 SS.

I can only muster 23 in my Mustang but it has a 3.73 and only 1 overdrive gear.

No reason to "settle" for the V-6.

It's about how you drive it, not just the sum of it's parts. I agree, mod it so you make it more efficient. CAI and headers should increase power and MPG. A good tune would work well without giving up performance. Don't buy a V6 and complain about companies not wanting to make supercharger kits for it either. If you want V8 power, get the V8! 22-25mpg is not bad at all!

The Xa and CAI did give my better gas mileage.

OP if your daily commute is gonna be 100 miles a day you should have no problem get 25+ mpg depending on traffic and your driving habits. But I'm sure like most of us when we first got our cars we played around to feel the car out if you can fight that you will be ok. When I take long trips I usually average 28 mpg, SS M6 with 22's.

Also a guy in my neighborhood has a v6 and can't get 28 mpg.

You can't really "de-tune" a V-8. You might try leaning it out, but leaning it out creates heat. Catalytic converters like heat, but not too much heat. Too much heat can melt the catalytic converter down.

You will do best by driving easier, watching your tire pressure, short shifting, and cruising at a lower speed.

A good tune gains mileage while a bad tune loses mpg.

If it's all highway 26-27 mpg isn't to bad. If it's more city driving then just get the V6 or hold off.

Truthfully,if it's all about gas mileage. Park the Camaro and buy a hybrid.

I use to own a 2002 Corvette. It had headers and a procharger. It was my daily driver because it averaged 28mpg city/highway.Long rides hit 32-34mpg.Thats probly due to the light weaght and aerodynamics of the car. My Hyndai got 27mpg at the time.

I got 26.5 mpg driving from LA to southern AZ(500+ miles). I have Pedders justice package and a Roto-fab intake no tune. I'm driving in the elevation to so you can get good gas mileage from the V8 Camaro. That included me speed with other cars to(not racing lol)
