Does an axleback exhaust add any horsepower?

Ever since I installed my SLP Loudmouth 1, which is basicly a muffler delete, my car seems to feel a bit more powerful. However I keep reading that an axleback exhaust wont add any power. Does anyone know if it will add even a minimal amount of hp?

Anything that can help the vehicle breath better , in this case exhale better, will add HP albeit small amount and efficiency.

You could gain 5-7 HP ........

Ooops ! Just noticed , you have the SLP Loudmouth 1 , you would definately feel the HP increase especially if you had also installed a better air filter like A K&N .... these two mods together should even give you noticeable throttle response improvement!

On the high end. All you're doing with an axle back is removing/replacing the mufflers, which tend to be restrictive....because they're mufflers.

I doubt you'd notice it...how many miles are on your car, LEADfoot?

4-5 at peak max on the v6 but much more at the torque peak and lower, Again, v6, but you should get a little more on the v8.

You don't have to.V6 mufflers are restrictive but gains are minimal. dyno's out their from people to prove it.

To keep things simple. The answer to that question is yes.

The stock SS exhaust is good HP wise, aftermarket will add more sound.

Most people are changing their exhaust to loose weight and add sound...

I would say the power you gained was in the weight you lost from those two boat anchors.

On another note, I did see them do a test on horse power TV where they added flowmasters to a 2008 Mustang GT. They did a before and after dyno and if I remember correctly I think it picked around 5hp. Maybe flowmaster was sponsoring the show though. I personally look at an axle back as a looks and sound thing. I really don’t see hp gains coming from that unless the stock system was super restrictive.

I think the power gain is in your head, the new sound is throwing you off

adding HP 101...

air in... air out.

The restrictive parts on these cars is the exhaust manifolds/cats followed by the air box then the exhaust. The factory V8/LS3 exhaust is fine.... quiet but fine. I have cut into one, its VERY unrestrictive. The L99 is a tad more restrictive due to large resonators. The manifolds/cats on the other hand are VERY restrictive.

I added 40+ hp and tq to the tires with going to a RotoFab and headers... I still run factory exhaust. Car is very quiet (until you jump on it) but MUCH more powerful.

The car may feel more powerful because of the noise. It the end, I bet you picked up a few. You need to work on the front first if you really want to boost power. As it was said, aftermarket exhausts save weight and add sound with minimal gains. When I change out to an aftermarket, I dont expect much as far as rwhp gains.

The restrictive part is the Cats, more so than the manifolds or any other part of the exhaust. If you replace the axle back but not the cats you probably wont see any measurable change.

True... I guess I consider the manifolds/cats as one big mess of crap. I assume you'd always just replace both parts at once. Mine are sitting in my barn collecting dust where they belong!

Right, though if you arent going to tune (as some people arent) then replacing the manifolds wont gain you anything, but replacing the cats will. It really just depends on what else you plan to do.

Don't forget you're also dropping some weight by getting rid of those boat anchors. Stock mufflers weigh ~48lb's!!!
