Short Tube Headers

If I were to install short tube headers onto my BORLA ATAK Full catback system would I need to get a tune?

2010 SS

Thanks in advance!

No problems with codes ... I would suggest the Doug Thorley shorties, they look awesome and there is a big time difference in low end torque ...

Was there much improvement in the sound in your opinion? I was thinknig about LT headers, but Shorties sound like a better option for me

If LT's are an option, they will ALWAYS be a better. They actually make a noticeable amount of HP. Shorties are debateable on power increases. As long as you know that with LT's, you'll need a tune and need to delete or replace the cats.

Skip the shorties and go long if you can. Do it right the first time.

For some reason, I hear that alot. LOL

You know, for some people, the Shorties and mid pipes sometimes work out well for them. Or even the Shorties with OEM Cats. And that's cool man. Still better than nothing.

But sometimes there is the need for that power increase and they come callin' for LT's!!

As I understand it, long tubes aren't technically legal in any of the 50 states because you're messing with the catalytic converters. Unless you have reason to replace them, tampering with them in any way is illegal, I think.

I, too, am from VA and have a set of long tubes waiting get installed. But, as of now, I'm grappling with the tuning and getting it to pass emissions in our state.

Not necessarily true. Take the car to a performance shop and get him to tune it right within out states emissions laws and the car should, in theory, pass with flying colors. The only set back is a visual inspection, if the inspector decides to look. I guess it's more trial and error to find one that doesn't.

As I understand it, but I may be wrong, but long tubes should technically be illegal in all of the 50 states because you're tampering with the catalytic converters, assuming there's nothing wrong with the cats. However, if there's some 'defect' in the cats, I believe the law says you can replace them.

A sharp tool and a hammer can usually 'find' a defect if you try hard enough.

If you're curious or concerned, call down to your state inspection office and just ask them. Worst case scenario is they trace the call, get GPS coordinates and send the CAT-Police after you. Best case is you get the answer you're looking for and can then make an informed decision on any modifications in your future.
