Uh...let see... 4000 pounds against a 9500 pound van. Outcome predictable. I wonder if this particular bumblebee had the airbags deploy, or whether it is a movie car with all the stuff stripped out of it for weight savings etc. I bet the driver of the police van or whoever was controlling the set access is gonna have some "splaining to do".

I can hear it now..."Sorry Sarge... I thought I could cut through the set and save some time and this Director yelled "CUT" and I turned my head and bammmmm."

It wasn't like the cop was coming out of nowhere. Basic driving 101 would tell you to always make sure what is coming into the path of where you are turning. Or are you one of the people that just blindly believe that if the light is green for you nobody could possibly be coming from that direction?
Cops are allowed to RUN a red light. They proceed through a redlight with caution.

Besides, the police had the road blocked off so the Transformers can pass through safely. The article said the cop is a 25 year old who wasnt supposed to be there.

Actually if you go to :10 of the Fox video you can see the control officer in the blue shirt standing by the traffic control sign step into the street and wave up the street for the police van to come on through. The problem was the police van obeyed the cop in the street but the Camaro couldn't see the action occur because he was coming around the corner at higher speed than the intersection was probably intended, by the time he realized the van was there he had little reaction time. Initially the cop did drive around the tractor trailers and probably thought to himself 'why aren't these idiots pulling to the right for', he looks up and to the his right to see Bumble Bee and makes a valiant evasive move. The driver in Bumble Bee could have been center punched very easily and killed. My guess is that on impact the police driver hit his head on the drivers side post at impact and got his bell rung and that is why the other officer had to come and turn off the siren. That is the kind of injury that will give the 25 year veteran a career ending medical pension.

I can guarantee you that the post-mortem on this accident will show that all the dominoes were lined up to fall and that it really didn't matter what driver errored because they all shared fault starting with the Director for not making sure the set was SAFE. Reading about the other girl severely injured, there is a definite pattern going on with their safety. I have personally worked dozens of movies as a paramedic/firefighter in Los Angeles and can tell you this has happened more times than I care to think about. The scenes are choreographed and rehearsed. Everybody gets in position and when the Director says "action" you go. No one knew the cop was going there. Even the big rigs didn't stop for him which was stunning in and of itself.

Yes, we as drivers should always look for emergency vehicles but It not quit that cut and dry.. My brother is a Memphis Fire Fighter and EMT that has to drive the Unit as well; guild lines follow the same as law enforcement. Fire trucks and Police Cars can run red light BUT it is THEIR responsibility to make sure that they slow and check the intersection to make sure it is clear before proceeding. They also will be ticketed for causing a wreck and running a light. Flashing lights on a car does not give you a pass to ignore everyone around you.
Good to hear that everyone was ok.

I see different issues at play.
1. Lack of communication.
2. Assumption by the police that they always have the right-of-way.
3. Failure of both parties to remember that you always have to expect the unexpected.

1. Lack of communication by the individual who allowed the cop to come on to a closed set and failure to immediately announce STOP ACTION (or everyone involved did not have headsets to hear the announcement).
2. Coupled with practicing the stunts several times which gets you into the mindset that a stunt will generally goes as practiced.
3. Failure of both parties to remember that regardless of how much training you have in your professions that unexpected events are always a reality of life.

If I had to assign the greater percentage of blame I'd probably assign it more to the police than I would the film crew because the police should be more experienced that their daily unplanned actions are more likely to cause unintended consequences. Whereas as the film crew was working on the principal that their planned action on a closed set would go as practiced. When those two principals collided; $hit happened.

Well, BumbleBee can be repaired, I do have to say that I am impressed at how well the Tahoe took that hit.

Ok this is 100% the officer's fault. Sorry, I love PD but this street was closed. They had officers on scene for crowd and traffic control in the area. The officer blew threw the closure and road blocks and went head on into a KNOWN movie set that involved high speed stunts. This supposed "bomb threat" kind of evaporated into thin air shortly after the accident.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the movie company go after the city for the damage caused.
