ChevyCamaro.getastart.comAlthough high gas prices threatened to ruin the fun earlier this year, the Pony Car wars are officially back on with the recent launch of the Dodge Challenger and the impending launches of the 2010 Ford Mustang and 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. The latter has been absent from the road for nearly six years, and apparently Camaro fans have been missing it.

According to Automotive News, Chevrolet has already taken more than 10,000 orders for the revived muscle car. Mark LaNeve, General Motors’ head of marketing and sales, revealed the news earlier today in a conference call.

LaNeve failed to break the pre-order sales down by model, but the V8-powered SS model likely has a slight lead over the V6-powered models. Despite the Camaro V6’s potent 300 horsepower, early adopters tend to go for the performance model, and with gas price nearing 5-year lows, there isn’t too much downside for the 400+ horsepower SS model.

A supplier issue is threatening to delay the start of Camaro production, but as long as there are no major setbacks, the Camaro should begin rolling off the assembly line in February.

At last count, I think the 6,000 mark, it was at like 80% SS's.

Be interesting to know if that ratio still holds.

Time for someone in Canada to chime in and tell us how many a shift can make. I do not see GM running more than 1 shift do to money issues.

I wouldn't be suprised. I bet these are still pure enthusiast orders, and they usually want it fully loaded.

Search the threads. There was a lot of discussion about how many cars could be produced in a day and a few of the Oshawa folks chimed in.

400-500 per shift. But that's full speed so it'll be much, much less at the beginning.

If history repeats itself, no. But if GM has their way, every man, woman and child will be driving a Camaro. But expect a vast majority to be v6s after the non-enthusiasts start buying.

More confirmation!

http://wot.motortrend.com/6414618/au...aro/index.html

After years of building anticipation, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro has been taking some hits this year thanks to high gas prices and a faltering economy -- and the car hasn't even hit showroom floors yet. More recently, a liquidating parts supplier has threatened to delay production. In spite of it all, GM reports today that it has received 10,000 pre-orders for the new muscle car.

The fifth-generation Camaro has been one of GM's most highly anticipated cars in recent memory, even as cost concerns have put a damper on the muscle car wars v2.0. Some have argued that a V-8 powered muscle car is not what GM needs to bring to the table in a time of fluctuating gas prices. Others have argued that a somewhat-impractical two-door sports car is not the right car for a time in an age where practical, economical, high-mileage people-movers are what Congress especially has been demanding Detroit build. Criticism has waned a bit since gas prices have dropped back below $2 per gallon, but with the economy still down and credit still tight, many consumers are probably thinking hard about whether or not this is the right time to buy a sports car.

Compounding GM's recent financial trouble and the aforementioned criticism about the Camaro's place in the current market was the recent bankruptcy and liquidation of one of the major parts suppliers for the Camaro. As is standard practice, GM gave supplier Cadence Innovation the parts and tooling needed to create the Camaro's interior door panels and consoles for mass production. Cadence Innovation, however, has filed for Bankruptcy and is currently being liquidated, and apparently is in no hurry to return the parts and tooling to GM. GM has, in turn, sued Cadence to get the equipment back so that it can redistribute it to another supplier. Should that fail to happen prior to January 12, production of the Camaro could be delayed, as will deliveries.

Despite the criticism, gas prices, economic downturns and supplier troubles, the 2010 Camaro seems to have built a core following of fans willing to brave the storm to get their car. We can only hope that GM resolves its supplier trouble quickly and those 10,000 pre-orders are delivered on time, lest GM face yet another PR nightmare in the wake of late deliveries.

Which brings up an interesting thought....

If they were projecting to build 100,000 of these things a year, that means they only have enough orders to fill in around 1 month of production. Would that mean (in theory) that every one of those that ordered will see their car within the first two months or so after February 16th?

There was a lot of discussion on this a few months ago. The fact is that the factory is not going to start pumping out 300 cars a day starting on 2/16. There is some amount of time needed to ramp the production. Plus, add in there that it is unclear to the public at this point if the plant is going to run 3 shifts of this car or not. So chances are that production will start out slowly and ramp up as everyone becomes more comfortable with the production. I believe they were at something like 6-8 per day at last check. That is a long way from 300.
