It is a special GM blend - It seems to be based on Dexron ATF automatic transmission fluid. The fluid is red, thin and has no heavy odor unlike conventional gear oils. I suspect this is due to the type of friction material used in the new synchronizer design. They just aren't the old brass blockers like they used in the old school Muncies.

I slapped in some of the MOBIL 1 synthetic and shifts smoooooth now compared to whatever the factory put in. I'd say that is special.

Nope! Tried the Mobil1, didn't help with notchy shifting! Went back to GM stock fluid.

It should be a Dextron IIIE or equal fluid. Most aftermarket fluids like RedLine will use a Dextron IV ATF in them.

Please note, do not use the new Dextron VI fluids for the A6 cars as the fluid is much to thin and slippery. the syncro's will not work correctly with this new fluid in the cars.

For race applications I have mixed in one quart of RedLine MTL with 3 quarts of D4 ATF per RedLine's suggestions for better heat protection.

Personally I think the notchyness is from the shifter and not the tranny. At least that is how it feels to me.

Yea, maybe. I have a Hurst short throw and I'm sure it makes the notchyness more pronounced. I may try an MGW next spring. My dealer says they can't duplicate the problem and won't tear into the trans unless it's broke!

I'm looking at my 2011 L99 A6 manual on page 11-6, under recommended fluids, the automatic transmission says:

DEXTRON-VI Automatic Transmission Fluid

Is the Dextron IIIE for the V6?
