Finally Apple catches on...

They're removing DRM, I've gained a slight bit of respect for them considering they're slowly catching up with the times. The reason I got a Sansa Mp3 player over and ipod is Flash memory never skips vs. disk drives, and itunes SUCKS! Now with no more DRM and the ability to put songs onto devices other than an ipod, I might actually use the program once in a while.

I still like WMP much better though.

Discuss Apple's decision...

When will this be implemented? In what firmware patch? I have a 2G Ipod Touch 8GB and I'm waiting for the thing to be jailbroken so it becomes usable. I hate having to go thru itunes..

iTunes is the biggest reason I will never buy iPods ever again. It sux big time. Just bought my kid a Samsung P3. FANTASTIC. He had a K3 b4 but it got stolen at school and I have a Samsung K3 too. Never an error EVER!

Prior to that had 4 ipods in the house. Two had to be returned..faulty!! The other two were tempermental in charging. Crap reliability and always freezing up!

Apple? NEVER again!

I have a Zen X-FI 16gig. The sound quality on it is better than any Ipod out (doesn't mean much to you USB audio users, but if you're stuck with just the line in (no C & C) it will make a HUGE difference) and it accepts almost every file type under the sun (even AAC).

Plus it has built in Wi-Fi and is compatible with numerous IM services. Makes classes more enjoyable.

I guess I'm the only one that likes iTunes better than WMP or Real or Music Match or any of the other players. I've used a bunch of them, and I find iTunes to run the smoothest, never crash, and do what I want.

You will still have to use iTunes to sync. All this means is that songs that are purchased from the iTunes store will not be copyright protected with Apple's proprietary format. Please don't forget that Apple will continue using their stupid AAC format while the rest of the world uses MP3 (and Microsoft mildly pushes WMA).

I use either WMP when I'm lazy or Creative Centrale, which is kinda like iTunes but for Zens. Creative finally got smart(er - they're still one of the best audio manufacturers out there) and came out with a universal program instead of using a different program for each player type. It was a pain when I lost my disk to my Zen and could only find my old Zen V disk - couldn't use that to manage my music.

P.S. - And if you haven't listened to anything using their new X-Fi tech, you should. Its a wonderful deal for the price. It has a built in crystalizer and the ability to split any audio file, even mono ones, for surround sound systems. All built into the MP3 player. Pretty nice for the price.

You dont need to use AAC thats only if you have to convert the files but it wil lload MP3's and put them on your iPod and as long as you have the setting on the iPod to not up date when plugged in you cant take the songs off the iPod onto say someone elses computer.

I was referring to when you buy songs from apple (the only thing that this announcement affects).

Do you know if this change will be retroactive?

Not sure but I HIGHLY doubt it. Apple doesn't do anything retroactive for free (paying for the mail app on the original iPod Touch).

It doesn't matter THAT much to me because I don't use iTunes and I weaned my fiance off it over a year ago - but my mom uses it and it would help her out a lot if the change was retroactive.

One can only hope.

I used to have a Zen:Vision 30GB....bought it with a waranty for $400, and the damn thing got Stolen within 2 months. I bought it because a comparable Ipod was more expensive (by almost $200 ), and didn't have as many features. But 50% of the reason though was because I hate itunes and everything that goes along with it.

I haven't bought an mp3 player in over two years since I lost that one. Sort of a self-inflicted punishment for not protecting it better...but now, with my new phone, I'll slap a 8GB sd card in there and vuala. But I'll probably never get an Ipod...they're overrated by a fair amount, imo.

One step in a LONG road to getting me as a customer... But not enough for me to jump on board.

The first step apple took towards getting me as a customer was the itouch/iphone. Good tool.. Problem is its locked down harder than a serial killer on death row.

Apple needs to seriously recognize that they will never get the entire market by locking out tech savvy people, the market share that will grow exponentially due to older generations dying off.

The change is NOT retroactive, but you can pay I believe $.30 a song to remove the DRM and get a 256kbps song instead of a 128kbps song.

The files are still AAC, but could be fairly easily converted now that DRM is gone, and there is no need for a firmware update for this. It simply means when you purchase a song there will no longer be burn limits, computer limits, etc.

And it's not so much Apple as it is the record companies. All EMI music was available a year ago without DRM, and Apple's reasoning for keeping Fairplay away from others was pretty simple: Apple had to guard the hell out of it, or they could risk losing the license to sell music.
