engine swap 2.8 to 5.7

hi im going to stick a 350 in my camaro it used to be a 2.8 v6 and i just wanted some advice.and i also have a few questions
what will i have to do about suspension for the new engine?
what other problems might i encounter?
and does anyone have a transmission that will bolt up to a 350, or know where i can get one for less than an arm and a leg?

thanx

Yea what kind of 5.7 are we talking about here? I can't answer suspension questions unless you have some kind of power/performance goal your set on. Try to find a T5 tranny or a T56 from a wrecked 1985-2002 F-body.

screw the T-5, they are weak pieces of trash. T-56 if you go manual, TH350 or 700R4 if you go auto

When finances are involved, the T5 can be a good alternative. Especially when you don't plan on putting too much power through it. If you beef it up some it can be fairly reliable. That said, the T56 blows it out of the water. TH350 or 400 is better than the 700R4 IMO.

That 350 combo sucks. You can build a 350 yourself that makes more power and costs less than 2k.

but the thing to keep in mind is if you go with a T5 to save on finances... then break it.... and spend even more to fix or replace it than you would have if you would have gotten a T56 to begin with.

better for what? flat out drag racing... sure. but its nice to have a 4th gear on the highway. trust me.

700r4s can be built just as strong if not more. TH350s and 400s are just more widely used as you dont usually need a 4th gear on the 1/4 mile or even the 1/8 mile. and since they are more widely used, there are more/cheaper parts available for them

ive got a good friend in my local car club who is currently building my 4l60e for next race season. a basic 700r4 that will hold up to 400hp would run you about $850.00 which is a freakin steal.

no. I mean a TH350. as in a Turbo-Hydramatic 350 transmission

pretty much. depending on the budget, you can get a turnkey motor for less than 3k with over 300 hp.

Oh I believe you. If I were getting either of those trannies I'd get them from Monster and have an overdrive unit installed. Very cost effective.

Now if we were talking about nothing but hardcore drag racing, it's all Powerglide, hands down.

I'd go with my personal transmission builder. he does a few "extra" machining things that other places dont.

and how cost effective are we talking? the overdrive units that I have seen will run you $1500 or more add that to the $1000.00 you are spending on a built th350 (and I mean BUILT) and you would be spending the same amount that I would on a 4 speed with a stall converter.

maybe I just have not seen any cheap overdrive units.

but I can build either for cheap and be strong for $xxx.xx or I could build the living crap out of either for $XXXX.XX

it comes down to the little things. 3 speeds are generally cheaper to build than 4 speeds. but built in overdrive is nice.

and dog tooth cut gears with a powerglide

I thought Gear Vendors had some cheaper units, but I guess you were right.

I can see how he means a 350 tranny now. It wasn't clear in the first post, and I've gotten used to trying to interpret alternate meanings to otherwise indecipherable posts.

572 is overrated for what it is. dont get me wrong, it is a great motor, but I wouldnt pay over 7k for it.

now the LSX 454 stroker..... that would be something to drop into a 3rd gen. in fact after we finish a few things on the LS1 swap, we are looking to drop a 454 into the 86.

The 700R4's are weak. I almost trashed one with my 3.1L.
It was a stupid thing that i did, but if a 3.1 could damage it, a 350 could murder it.

Unless it was in terrible shape to begin with, or already had a mechanical failure, I find this hard to believe.

eventually i want to stick a 5.0 or 5.7 in my '86 berlinetta, but they are so damn expensive that it will be a while before that happens

700R4's are not weak lol. There are millions of them on trucks, suv's, vettes etc. You can get them with performance builds like the Raptor series
