better mileage

might sound dumb but i am looking to buy a house that is nearly 35 miles one way from my place of work. since the 2011 SS is my only option it will be my daily.

according to my car im getting an average of 17 mpg... according to my math its more like 15.5, the car is bone stock by the way and 80% of my driving is city stop and go 1-4 gears.

will a rotofab intake and or exhaust (corsa) increase my mileage at all? if i do buy this house and move within the next 4 months my drive will be all highway.

well, i believe the CAI will and a tune can even give you better MPG,the tune will make your engine work more efficiently. i am not sure what if a exhaust will give you better MPH. but if you go with corsa you will have no drone with that drive to work

I think looking for MPG gains is the wrong reason to mod anything on your car. are you just trying to justify it to your S/O or something? : P

If you drive 65 mph on the highway you can get 24 mpg, with the L99 anyway bone stock.

Um, care to explain how a catback is going to increase your MPG, especially on a stock car?

Well just by looking at the resonator and the huge mufflers on the L99 especially the exhaust flow is very restrictive so think it makes sense that better flow would = better mileage

I remember seeing a thread where someone cut open the resonators to see the internals .. it has to be the worst setup ive ever seen

I realize they are big but they are far from restrictive. Find that pic and trace it out. It's a straight through design with a helmholtz tube in the big suitcase. Why do you think there is little to nothing to be gained, in terms of HP, from a aftermarket exhaust. Catbacks/axlebacks are for sound, headers are for power.

I can't find that picture but from what I remember theres the 2 mid pipes after the catalytic conv that go into the resonator and in the resonator it's just like another muffler and on the other end there's the 2 other pipes that lead out to the mufflers .. all that exhaust has to build up more to be pushed out of the resonator than through an xpipe. which is why the stock exaust is so quiet. with the xpipe it just goes straight through.

maybe I'm wrong but I still think my catback allows for better flow..
unless my car magically decided to get better milage, coincidentally at the same time I installed the exhaust

The stop/go traffic in Ca is what's killing you. In those conditions this car won't do very well.Probly beneficial to buy an older Honda for your commute. In the long run it would save $$.

My commute is 35miles one way.Car gets 20-22mpg due to little traffic.Takes me 35-40 minutes to get there.

I don't think the fuels saving will make up for the cost of the mods... I want to eventually get some on mine, but if you do improve your mileage 1-2mpg, how long will it take you to recoup that money... Just a thought! I picked up a four banger for my commute.

I agree with slowhawk, I have a 2ss ls3 and drive 30+ miles to work each way and depending on my driving habits or lead foot. I can get 24.7 doing 65 with cruise control on.

Single biggest KILLER of MPG is Idling at a Stop Light.
Second is Driving in Lower Gears at slow speeds.
Third is Warm Up time.

When you Travel farther and steadier MPG will Improve.

Our Street Package has been known to improve Mileage in Highway conditions up to 2 MPG.

I agree.

My Vette can do upwards of 30mpg on the highway, but a simple change in route going back and forth to work and killing off some stoplights I can take it from 16.8 mpg to 19.4 mpg over the week average just by getting out of the stop and go crap.

Any big engine car is going to have a problem when you are in that kind of sitsuation.

Doing upgrades like a low restriction exhaust and intake setup can help boost economy numbers, and in some cases so can changing gears. If you find yourself shifting a lot and in stop and go, as odd as it sounds sometimes a deeper gear will help boost mileage as well.

so should i avoid short shifting it around town and limping around in 5th gear around 40 mph?

i knew the risks of fuel consumption when i bought the car. i have only owned camaros and mustangs so i am used to the mid teens for mileage.
