OK....

On a car with trunk hinges obviously running it along the hinge is fine...it has support and protection from the hinge.

On a car with no internal hinge something else needs to be done. That is a weak spot gentleman, no matter how we try to justify why it is the way it is.

The IVER car was a proper implementation in the case of external hinges. The solution there would be to have the opening on the trunk lid be ABOVE the trunk gasket, not below and run into it's own gromet on the body.

We can beat this to death I guess, like I said, we'll just have to see what can be engineered by the DIYer to resolve. I may get fancy and do up a carbon fiber (or aluminum) "arm" to protect it similar to the hinge inside the trunk method. I'll have to see it in person to figure out what it'll take.

We don't know that it's weak. And we certainly don't have the authority to state that the IVER method was the "proper" way to do it. Obviously....they did it....and something wasn't right....

The people building this car are not idiots....I suppose if you're looking for a project to do you can fab something up...but there's nothing to worry about.

We'll agree to disagree and move on.

I think that explains it. It is easy to keep it tight and clean when struts or braces are inside the weather striping, but not so easy when they are outside.

As you can see the "problem" occurs when the hinges are on the outside of the weather stripping-you can not just tack it to the arm to keep it clean. I would say to live with it for a while and see if it becomes a problem-I never even noticed it and you can see we made much use of the trunk! As for why they changed it from the IVER? My guess is that when you start drilling holes like that in that area you open yourself for problems with water leaks? Again just a thought, but you can bet they made the change for a reason. I don't think this will lead to negative perceived quality-your average driver is never going to notice it, and it did not present itself as an issue of being in the way, breaking, etc.-if it were something that was seen or touched a lot sure, but not this IMO.

Thanks for your insight. For me, it's not a question of functionality (whether it'll be in the way or not), it's 100% aesthetics. Personally, I'll come up with a better "look" but only because I have the advantage of having a machine shop at my disposal to fabricate something. When I'm done and satisfied with the results, I'd be happy to produce more and sell them at cost to members here if anyone's interested. If anyone comes up with ideas, feel free to PM me with them. I'll send my email to anyone who wants to include sketches, etc... If I use your idea, yours is free.
