L99 owners - high flow cats, cat back exhaust, and AFM

I am trying to cover all of my concerns before I buy high flow cats. I bought the MBRP system designed for the L99 / 6 speed auto and it sounds great, but too quiet. I know high flow cats will wake that right up and provide a little power gain, while allowing me to avoid getting a tune (reason for not getting long tubes)

any owners out there in the same boat that went through with it? L99, HFCs and a catback without a tune? I am concerned that when AFM kicks on the exhaust will sound sound will turn crappy and amplified, currently AFM is not a concern at all.

I may just chance it and see how it goes but would like to avoid the resale hit and install times if someone's already experienced this and disliked it.

I have a L99 with LTH, x-pipe and loudmouth 1. I had my loudmouth 1 installed(which is basically muffler delete) before i got my tune and AFM was still on, it was noticeable when AFM kicked in but it didn't sound THAT bad. it wasn't crazy annoying but it was noticeable. then i bought a diablosport for $290 and a cord that is used to connect it to my computer or laptop. anyway i turned off afm with that and had a local specialty mechanics shop use my diablosport connected to his laptop and got me a tune. then i bought LTH(no cats) and an x-pipe. I'm getting high flow cats soon and getting another tune with a different program that the mechanics shop is using and not charging me. But if i stopped after loudmouth 1 and got no tune i would be happy. but if u got headers it would be really noticeable and i assume annoying. sorry if i rambled lol.

I have jba highflow cats resonator delete with edelbrock x pipe and muffler delete. I love my exhaust and so does everyone that hears the car. What I do to avoid A F M is put the car in manual mode shift up to third and then down shift to second and then up shift back to third this disables A F M but you have to stay in manual mode if you put it back in drive A F M comes back....everyone say my car sounds mean as hell

I installed ARH w/high flow cats to the stock t/pipes and mufflers first. It was good, but the AFM would cut in and out which was annoying, so, I installed a CAI and a custom tune. Shut off the AFM and the car is awesome. Ran it on a road trip for 5200 miles and it performed flawlessly. 24.3 MPG at 70-75 most of time. Get-er-done.

Being a California car i have not messed with the long tubes or High flow cats. I have done a Flowmaster Cat back but my best investment has been my SCT x3 handheld tuner with a tune from Janetty turning off my AFM and tuning the transmission shift points

I'm sure the tunes the best thing for an L99 if you want to have some fun with it. I just really value the warranty until I have put some serious miles on the car and have it thoroughly looked over. 2k miles and no track time yet, not the time to break the warranty for me.

warranty in tack, just reload stock tune when it goes in for service, no problems.

yeah with diablosport you can keep the stock tune, and apply it later if you need it.

guys, I don't want to turn this into a debate about what the ecu is capable of, but I believe it can count flashes and that if a catastrophe happened to the engine or tranny that was expensive enough, they'd be asking GM directly to buy off on the repair and they'd pull reports to see the ECU was tampered with and flashed multiple times.

i could be wrong, that's just my belief, and it's why I will not tune. I am not willing to gamble the costs until I have full faith in the car.

just looking to hear from some L99 owners with HFC's and no tune .. thanks

i'm the one you've been waitin for.

i've got a set of solo hi-flow cats arriving fri and i'll get em on sat.
i've got the L99 with cai and corsa cat backs and stock exhaust manifold right now. the corsa was pretty quiet at first, but now they're makin some good sound. can't wait to get the solo's on there.

i'm with you about warranty for at least a year, then it's no holds barred.
i was gonna do the dt shorties, but then i'd have to replace them later with Lt's so i just went with hi-flows.

I did my ehaust before the AFM made me insane sounded like diesel dieseling down

I had the same concerns about the tune and I respect where your coming from but after a few days of the AFM she was at the tuner, the debate about the pcm will go on forever although so far I havent heard of anyone having warranty problems yet

now the car has ARH 1 7/8s 3 inch x pipe and spintech axlebacks sounds nuts !

i won't say it couldn't happen to me, that's why i waited on the shorties. a week from now i could change my mind and throw in a set of Lt's.

Entaille, I have an L99 with DT shorties, DT Catback, AEM intake, and never been tuned. The car sounds really nice at the moment but it needs a muscle tone into it. JBA midpipes are heading my way soon and I'll let you know how it goes/sounds. AFM ? I don't even notice or hear them.
I agreed that we're not rich enough to mess with the warranty at this moment.

Not really you just get the car up to 35 mph in 3rd down shift to 2nd and shift to 3rd just once this with the paddels and that's it just stay in manual mode and shift with your paddels on the stirring wheel

y2k and goliath - will be interested to hear your feedback

black - is the afm sound that bad with HFC's that you feel obligated to force AFM off using your method? thanks

I have all the goodies listed with no tune. The car runs great with loud exhaust and very little drone. I too am holding off on a tune mainly unable to locate a good tuner in my area. That maggie or whipple is really tempting me and would push the tune issue.
