What does LT stand for?

I know SS stands for Super Sport, but what does LT and LS stand for, if anything? I noticed Chevy uses LT on other cars besides the Camaro as well.

This was the best explanation I could find.
http://ask.cars.com/2007/11/chevrolet-lt-tr.html

LT is a trim level found across the Chevrolet lineup on its cars, trucks and SUVs. LT isn't an acronym for something like “Luxury Touring” on newer models. According to a Chevrolet representative, it’s simply a code for higher-optioned trim designations. LT trims commonly have features and pricing that rank in between the base LS models and the higher-end LTZ, Sport or SS models. Some cars have two, three or even four levels of LT, named 1LT, 2LT, 3LT and 4LT, with each package having progressively more features.

I beg to differ. LT = Luxury Touring and originally replaced the SS (RPO z27) in 1973. I do agree that it is now a one up trim level across the board.

Yea, I bought a new Camaro LT (Cam #2) in 1977. It stood for Luxury Touring back then. It had power windows, power steering, rear window defog, and cruise control. You couldn't get cruise control on a stick back then. I'm enjoying my 2011 stick and cruise. My favorite option this week though is the heated seats.

I guess luxury touring makes some sense, however ls = luxury sport doesn't really seem to.

I wish car companies actually had meanings behind trim designations that make sense. My old Nissan had 3 trims, SE, GXE, and GLE. Se meant sports edition, okay I get that. But gxe and gle? WTF

They're just picking some heritage designation for a mid-trim version of a car out of their history. As far as luxury is concerned, it's all relative. Think of what even Rolls Royce offered back when the LT designation was new. Maybe they had heated leather seats, but back-up sensors? Automatic HID headlights? Six way power seats? PDIM? HUD? Voice commands for music, navigation directions, accidents, and phone calls? To say nothing of having 300+ hp V6 engines with more than one horsepower per cubic inch that goes 0-60 in six seconds or less but still gets 29-30 mpg on the highway?

Sure, the luxury goal posts were moved over the decades, but as far as I'm concerned this is luxury, my friends.

None of the trim designations really stand for anything anymore (aside from SS and RS). For example, the top trim level on most Chevrolets is LTZ.

I asked the same question once (it wasnt exactly what does the lt stand for but you get my point) and I was told that the company chose's trim model names by how much publicity (not sure if thats the right word to use) that the trim's name gets.

Like basically they use words that the adverage consumer? would use in like good search I guess is a way to describe it. Sorry im not much help.

My first car was a 1993 Ford Tempo GL. I always imagined the GL always stood for Good Luck (getting there alive).

Back on topic though, it's all marketing anymore. The trim designation doesn't have to mean anything anymore (whether it used to or not) just as long as it serves to differentiate between packages. Chevy just uses LS, LT, LTZ and/or SS as its designation. They could change it tomorrow to initials that actually made sense across the board if they wanted but it would require a good deal of marketing to re-educate customers, so it's just easier to stay with what's familiar.

I remember the LT trucks all had leather standard. I used to say it stood for LeaTher when I was a child.

I've always understood them as Luxury Touring, and Luxury Sport, and LTZ? Luxury Touring "Zora Arkus-Duntov", of course!

SLE = Special Luxury Edition
SLT = Special Luxury Trim
SL = Sport Luxury

Though... I have my own acronyms...
LS = Less Stuff
LT = Lotta Toys
LTZ = Lotta ToyZ
SL = S***ty Level
SLE = Sporty Limited Edition
SLT = Serious Lotta Toys

My 2004 Canyon is an SLE, but if it were purchased today, it would be an SLT (it has every option). GM has been playing with the "face" of the "T" package quite often lately.

I seriously want Ford to make "WTF" a trim level on their Fiesta. Who's with me?

I'd like to know what a 3LT and 4LT have to offer. Never heard of these (for a Camaro anyway).

While we are at it, from WIKI. I like the last part.

On June 28, 1966, General Motors held a live press conference in Detroit’s Statler-Hilton Hotel. It would be the first time in history that 14 cities were hooked up in real time for a press conference via telephone lines. Chevrolet General Manager Pete Estes started the news conference stating that all attendees of the conference were charter members of the Society for the Elimination of Panthers from the Automotive World and that this would be the first and last meeting of SEPAW. Estes then announced a new car line, project designation XP-836, with a name that Chevrolet chose in keeping with other car names beginning with the letter C such as the Corvair, Chevelle, Chevy II, and Corvette. He claimed the name, "suggests the comradeship of good friends as a personal car should be to its owner" and that "to us, the name means just what we think the car will do... Go!" The new Camaro name was then unveiled. Automotive press asked Chevrolet product managers, "What is a Camaro?" and were told it was "a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs

I don't mean this as a slam, you are very knowledgeable. LTZ may be a top trim in most models. I can't list them but I do know there is no LTZ Camaro or Corvette.
We all know what SS is but what does ZO6 and ZR1 stand for on the Vette as ZR1 is the top dog there?

LTZ is on Cruze, Malibu, Impala, Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado, and Avalanche. Might be missing one or two models, it's late.

I think Z06 and ZR1 are just RPO codes that ended up becoming popular designations for Corvette models.

I think Corvette is the only model that has 3LT/4LT trims. Might be wrong, but that's the only one that comes to mind.

Camaro LT, light?

Wife makes us eat that Mayo LT. Leaves a little to be desired in the taste department, too.
