Cost-Effective Camaro Weight Reduction

So I was talking to the Master, Doc, and got some ideas for dropping the Camaro's weight (lighter weight racing lugnuts, rotors, and tires) and I was wondering if anything else sprang to anyone's mind. Stuff like "trade out the heated seats for normal" I'm not worried about, because I don't want to trade any luxuries for this. Also out is anything that costs more than its worth, like an $800 item that drops ten pounds or what have you.

Thoughts?

The stock mufflers are a good 25 pounds each, compared to aftermarket ones which are like 6 or 7

Pretty much everything in the trunk (tire, mat, whatever)

Aftermarket longtubes.

Lightweight wheels

Washer fluid?

Coil over shocks and other suspension parts..

The SS doesn't have a spare But I suppose this recommendation could instead apply to the fix-a-flat stuff that is in the spare's place...

Really?? I read on this forum the SS (at least w/ normal tires) can't have a spare because a 20" tire won't fit in the trunk and a donut won't fit over the Brembo brake system.

I replaced the headers on my G8 GT. The after markets were much lighter and stock ones were cast iron. Not sure if our Camaros have the same ones but I would bet they do.

AHHH CRAP. Yeah you guys were right, I was thinking of my old identacle v6 before I traded it for the V8. I never checked the trunk of the V8.

Guess I was wrong, no spare.

Okay, I'll re-word my statement. The SS isn't supposed to have a spare

I believe there were some dealers out there that thought they could add a spare tire as an RPO option, however the spares that come as part of that RPO option will not fit over the Brembo brakes.

So, InvaderMoose, if you've got a donut in your trunk, you may want to go back to your dealer and let them know:

Edit: Crisis resolved.

No worries, Invader!

Back to the topic at hand: lowering the 3800 pounds and not paying out the rumpus maximus for it.

I would think the best way to lose weight without losing luxury is just by replacing things with lighter weight components.

Like replacing the stock wheels with ligthweight aftermarket, then selling the stock wheels you dont lose as much money.
Same goes for suspension and exhaust and probably a lot of other things.

Yeah, Moose; I guess my q is, what is cost-effective (as in, cost vs. gain) to do that to?

Well, everyones already suggested the mufflers because that's probably the best thing to start with if you haven't already changed it.

Losing about 40 pounds and gaining 30HP at the same time with a full aftermarket exhaust is pretty helpful.

That is the difficult part with weight loss. It is expensive and I have not seen any easy way around it.

To me the best bang for the buck on weight loss is rims because you get other benefits from that weight loss.

Spare tire 20-25lbs
Coilovers 10-15lbs
Cat back exhaust 35lbs
Wheels 50-60lbs stock wheels are 32.9lbs each
Rotors and ceramic pads won't be too much weight saved here 5-10lbs maybe? Might be able to find lighter weight calipers as well.
CAI maybe 2 to 3lbs?

Taking out the back seat will save a few pounds as well.

I came up with about 122-138 pounds lighter with those mods.

Best way to loose weight and save some money is to eat less. The driver is one of the heaviest accessories to the car.
Leave the significant other at home.
Also don't fill the tank. Leave it half full.

This.

At 8 pounds per gallon, with a 19 gallon tank, if you run it with just 8 gallons, or even less. Youre saving about 88 pounds.

Go on a diet if you're a little overweight LOL

Take off 20 lbs or so. Cheap and healthy.
Back in the day when I was a medicore MX racer, losing twenth pounds of unneeded weight was as good as a HP increase.
