A win for automatic transmission...

Geez... I sorta hate to open up that can of worms, but, here's my story:

Last weekend, I was stopped at a red light. A car rolled up behind me, and came to a stop... but about 10 seconds later, dude rolled right into me. No injuries, as it was a pretty low- speed impact, but certainly enough damage to my car to warrant the exchange of insurance info. The kid driving the other car was very apologetic, and said that he "just wasn't paying attention."

I filed my claim with his insurance company, but it took a few days for his adjuster to call me back. WHEN he did call (yesterday, Thursday), he said, "It took me a while to get back to you, because there is some question about how this happened. It has been suggested that YOU rolled backwards into my client's car, while he was stopped at the light!"

Sure, I know that EVERYBODY'S story changes the moment they are out of sight... I promise you, that if your own mother crashed into you, she might apologize at first, but later on, she will blame you... she'll throw you under the bus, I promise. She'll say that you were drunk, and a bad driver on a GOOD day. Your mother will even say that you commit LOTS of crimes, and she'll give you up, in exchange for her being found not at fault. But I still hadn't seen how this very obvious rear- end case--- with witnesses!--- could be turned around. But, I guess that nice kid still wanted to weasel out of liability.

My response to the adjuster was that, (A) Hell no, and (B) Hell no. I mentioned that I has dash- cam footage showing the impact, and it showed very clearly that my vehicle was NOT moving, prior to the impact. Perhaps the threat of dash- cam footage was unnerving, because the adjuster suddenly became very stuttery. He said, "Oh, okay, well, is your car a manual or an automatic?"

I replied that it was an automatic.

He said, "Okay, then we will disregard the idea of your car rolling backwards. That finishes the investigation; we will cover any and all repairs to your vehicle."

That was it... since I drive an automatic (and by choice, damnit!), the "rolling backwards" notion was disregarded, and the debate over culpability is finished.

A double win... Yea for the auto and yea for the dash cam.. I have been preaching dash cams for many years.. Imagine the reverse ( no pun intended): if he backed into you it could have been the same debate. A dash cam usually stops lies in their tracks.

I fire up the willing engine, responding with a roar. Tires spitting gravel I commit my weekly crime.

This is not "win" for automatic transmissions.

What you guys are missing here is that it is a "lose" for people who pay for insurance- yet another way to over-simplify so they can pay out less money on claims.

As for the manual response, all you have to do is show the insurance company a thread on the Hill Assist!

As far as the title goes, this picture says it all!

Amazing how fast an insurance company changes their tune as soon as you mention having video proof. Same thing happened to me.
